The Crackberry does come with unlimited data, though, but I really wouldn't use that much and you have to pay 69 cents per outgoing text message.

Let me know what you find about that... I've been in the market too. Our cruise stops at a bunch of cities in different countries so a sat phone sounds like the most reliable option but I haven't been able to find one that wasn't outrageous. Doesn't look like there's an Iridium dealer nearby. Have you checked ebay?

This place: Satellite Phone Rental From Mobal - No Deposit, Free Round Trip Shipping, Iridium Phone, Just $9 a Day! has them for $9/day and that includes FedEx to you and return. Most places offer lower prices, but kill you with $20-30 shipping charges. It also inlcudes the Motorola 9505A, which from what I read is the phone to get. Some places have the 9500 (I think that's what it is), which is older and not good. It's definitely the way to go for a cruise ship since it has coverage anywhere on Earth. I doubt it will get a signal in your room, but that's what the deck is for. Also, look at the incoming minute prices. They're billed to the caller (that's why they say free incoming minutes) and they're usually extremely expensive, like $5-7/minute. Outgoing are usually $1.75-1.95. The plans are slightly cheaper, but I doubt I would use 30 or more minutes.
to find more plans, just Google satellite phone rental.

convo with paka continued:
I'm buying Paris to London round-trip tickets today for a daytrip and before taxes they're only $75 (total), but the taxes, fees, and currency conversion fees brings it up to $450. And this is the model society some people are pushing for? It's obscene to pay that much in taxes and fees, but that's how they suppport the "free" medical care and unlimited immigration..
We were going to take the train, but that is now around $750. So now we have to become experts in London trains in one day and hope everything works out. It should be quite an adventure

We'll be there mid-May. Tried Ryanair but they don't do Paris to London, but easyJet does. they have hella cheap fares as long as you're going without luggage or anything like that. It's like an a la carte plane ticket which should be more of the norm instead of the exception. Let the people bringing on luggage pay for their luggage instead of spreading the wealth. Hard to believe this idea came from (pretty much) socialists...
so if it wasn't for the stinking taxes and fees, it would've been an extremely pleasant experience. The worst part is paying 30 Euro for a 6 month old baby. That is once again pure taxes and fees. The airline doesn't charge anything.

Yea...and since he has let his mother in law move into the Whitehouse with him....she is the Obama Momma.
And if she were to marry the Dali Lama, she would be the Obama Momma Lama.
And if she had an affair, it would be the Obama Momma Lama Drama....
OK...I'll go and cook dinner now!

Well then, you NEED what everyone else does and I guess will have to pay. Me, I am a do it against the mainstream type of gal.
Flying to and from Germany on Tuesday...avoiding weekend (leisure get a start early) types and M-F (business) types. We will do out driving trips on the weekend and enjoy the weekdays for the public trans/tour types. All our river cruises (day type only) will be during the weekdays to maximize our enjoyment. I guess for 5 people the train isn't bad for $790 since it is what, 2 hours between Paris and London??? Heck, it is faster than flying with the "airport" time.
