Wow. Haven't thought about Handy Andy in a while. My very first paying job was at the Handy Andy on the corner of Fair and Goliad. Made all of 30 cents an hour to bag groceries and carry them out. That was about 1958.

I don't recall the name of the record store- but the owner was killed in is house in/around Dignowity Hill. I went to a party there- really cool place with most of the rooms opening into a large central plaza-type space.

The Alamo Drive In on Austin Hwy- we used to watch movies playing at the drive in from the deck at 7 oaks country club; the Frontier on Austin Hwy- Big Orange on Austin Hwy- Princes on Broadway- where the real "hoods" hung out - going to Oak Hills Country Club before 410 was constructed, or the valley before 281- Bruners where Central Market is now -when Handy Andy was the best grocery store in town - The Pussycat club downtown seeing Spirit up close at the club- seeing Hendrix and Springsteen at the Auditorium

I was at St Gregory's from the late sixties through the early 80s. We moved out of the dellview area in the about 83. Then in 89 I moved out of state. The owner of Buddy's, Buddy Curry, went to church down Vance Jackson at St Marks. That was the church that had one of its buildings look like a castle. I remember the chicken place, didn't they also serve Chinese food too. I used to take guitar lessons at Dellview music near there.

I used to work at the Handy Andy in Wonderland mall and it was considered more of an upscale grocery store. Expensive wine etc. I think that as Handy Andy tried to maintain that style people chose the lower priced food stores (HEB). I moved to Pen Foods after Handy Andy and they took the upscale idea over the top. Pen foods was owned Norman Pentecost, His daughter and I went to Churchill together. Another Pen foods tidbit, the Pentecost came down from Canada.

There was another grocery chain they tried to make in the 80s I think it was called Hidden Harvest, or something like that. I remember one being on nacodoches just outside of 410. They had a couple of other locations which I remember but don't remember.

To bring up another do you remember. What about bicycle shops. I remember I bought two bikes from the Bike Barn on Blanco when I was into bike riding. Used to go downtown the Chas. James bike shop. (I think that was on main.) you had the Schwinn Store on blanco and rector. There was also a bike shop on Nacodoches just outside of 410, I can't remember the name of that one. I had heard that they over to broadway but I am not sure about that.

Specialty stores like that have been driven out by the big box stores. The same way they closed the record stores. (Hog Wild though has still survived)

I think you mean Sun Harvest. Recently the store merged with another company to become Sprout's. If I remember correctly, there was another Sun Harvest on Fredericksburg Rd. just outside Loop 410.
