I've been trying to locate a church on the West side around the area around where
Centeno's store used to be.
I only mention this store for reference only, it wasn't really that close.
Not sure if the street was Buena Vista, Martin, Houston or W. Commerce.

If you cross Zarzamora St. heading west, you've gone too far.
The church was the old style similar to San Fernando cathedral and was surrounded
by a wrought iron black fence. Probably was torn down.

Sorry, Rancho, no info on the church. Was it a Catholic church? Maybe the S A Diocese could help?

Gone But Not Forgotten!

There was a time when the entire mass was in latin
& no mariachis around to play a tune.

Rancho,

Yep, there was also a time when boys used the mens room and girls used the ladies!

My, how times have changed!

( If I ever see a man entering the ladies room while my daughter or granddaughter are in there, he might be exiting
feet first!)

Not saying I support the whole transgender bathroom thing going on right now but I am sure there was a time when people used to think bathrooms for all race types was unthinkable. People's way of thinking and acceptance tends to change over time.

Woolworth's soda fountain on the corner of Houston St. and Alamo Plaza had a sign that would
direct you to where you could sit based on color.
On one end was for blacks and the other end for whites.

I was very young, but I do recall wondering why there was a need for separation.
I think we sat in the middle. But the looks we got from the waitress was not too pleasant.
