Yeah - we'd scour the roadsides, especially durin' June an' December for fireworks $$$ - IIRC, beer bottles were 2 cents, soda bottles 5 cents.

It was Jim Dawson that did the cartoons. He was on WOAI for years, and then went to KSAT. Dow Sherry Did the "otherwise hot and dusty". Jud Ashmore got his start on 12 Star Final. He later went to KENS. 12 Star Final was called "Blood and Guts" by many. Not too long ago i read that Tom Ellis is still in the business.

Jerry Zimmerman was a weekend weatherman, as well as former city councilman, Glen Hartman.

Some othe newsmen I remember are Pat Boyette, Bill Shomette, and Jim Abbott at KENS. Frank Matthews, Henry Guerra, Al Anderson, Martha Buchanan, and sportscaster Randy Clay at WOAI. George Sharman, and weatherman Bill Kelso at KONO/KSAT.

Who was Ken Carter with? The beginning music to 12 Star Final sounded like you were really about to watch the news....on Friday nights 5 star shock and project terror followed.

Ken Carter was a news anchor for KSAT-12 in the 1970s. I think he previously had a stint as a DJ at KONO radio.

He started wearing those Clark Kent glasses too. I remember him on the radio but didn't remember which station.

Check out this website:

San Antonio Radio Memories It's a fun website. Lots of good memories there.

Scroll down to "The Bossmen And", and you'll see a picture of Ken Carter. Ken died in 2008. I think he was the anchor at KONO/KSAT TV when 12 Star Final became Newswatch.

How about back in the 70's Dr. Demento, I believe this was on radio station KEXL.

Default Pic-A-Pop

Pic-A-Pop had at least two locations in San Antonio. One was on Fredericksburg Rd. about a mile or so inside the loop near the old Shakey's. The other was at I-35 and Walzem (Artesia bottled water later used the site into the 90s). Pic-A-Pop actually was a Canadian company which died off in the late 70s or early 80s. Interestingly, they're now making a comeback; if you know someone in the Winnipeg, Manitoba area they just might be able to hook you up...

Default Pic-A-Pop

I just came up with a third Pic-A-Pop location. It was in a small strip center at Bitters and Nacogdoches. The strip center is still there today and the Pic-A-Pop slot is now a fairly rough looking TV repair shop.
