Ugh, I tried El Pollo Loco and was close to disgusted. IMHO, that food is bad. I've been to a knockoff called El Pollo Feliz in Houston and it is much better than El Pollo Loco. Maybe I was expecting more from the original, but it fell way short of my expectations.

I will second EZ's. They have a skinless, boneless grilled chicken breast served with steamed fresh veggies called Liberty Chicken. So good. And the Rosemary Chicken served with steamed veggies.
If you aren't watching what you eat their calzones are very good as are the Caesar salads (with or without chicken) and the Chicken Roma Italian Salad. They also have the best chicken strips. And Basil Chicken Pasta is very good. Can you tell our kitchen was being remodelled for 6 months and we live near an EZ's?
Their prices are a little higher than other fast food places but you get quality, good food.

I had the Liberty Chicken for takeout at lunch yesterday.
I forgot to request this, but they have always substituted the carrots and squash for extra broccoli in the past.
The pizza (or calzone) trio is a good deal at $7-8. Pizza, side salad, and drink for the price is not bad at all. But yeah...not if you are watching the fat, carbs, and cals.

Pollo Loco Chicken - chicken tastes good (but IMO still a little on the greasy side), however the rice tastes like the boil-in-a-bag crap and the potatoes are like glue. I tried the carnitas and spit it out. It was like chewing rubber!! All fat and no meat!!
Joe's - I knew when my husband brought the menu home I was in for some good Italian food. Red and green ink on white paper, just like NJ. lol

I've been to El Pollo ONCE, at Culebra and Tezel, and it was delicious......for fast food chicken. I didn't eat the rice, or the potatoes, so I can't comment on that, but the chicken had a really nice fresh flavor. Would I eat it every day? No, but the OP was looking for something different. To me, stopping for takeout at EZ's or Pei Wei is not EASY, but I don't know as I've never tried EZ's for pickup and I've never eaten at Pei Wei in or out.
Maybe they are quick and easy......but El Pollo Loco, in my limited experience with them, was both. And I can't believe I'm on here defending a fast food place that I've been to once.

Haha, well I DO like the $1 tacos at El Pollo Loco, and it is very easy since there is a drive thru...but sadly I have to drive through the mess on San Pedro to get to the one by North Star Mall. I'm closer to 1604 on 281.
EZs has made the togo thing a LOT easier...they do curbside togo now, and they have been very fast and efficient with the billing and delivery of the food.
Of course, a phone call is involved, but I have them listed as a contact in my phone. I'm about ready to program the number into my Bluetooth/voice dial in the car, actually.

so what all does Joe's offer? I've driven through NJ, but never got off the highway.. I also was in the lovely Newark airport for a 14 hour layover and took the bus to NYC to kill some time.
anyone feel like scanning the menu?
and the only crazy chicken I've been to is the Culebra/Tezel one and I only went there once. My chicken was grilled very well and wasn't greasy at all, which is good because I really don't like greasy anything.
