Default Officer Housing at Lackland AFB

Hey everyone. MY wife is being assigned to Lackland AFB early 2010, and we were wondering about family officer housing on Lackland AFB. There is very little about it anywhere here on the forum, and we are wondering what it is really like. Is it safe, how old and run down are the units? If base housing is too bad, we might rent of base, so where should we look? We don't really want to buy in this economy, as we will only be here for four years. We have friends who bought a house at their last base and still have not sold, two years later. Please help. If it would be easier, you can email me at Moderator cut: email address
Thanks everyone.

P.S. We will have a four year old with us, and a baby! I am a stay at home dad and very excited about all the stuff to do while in San Antonio!

I am a nurse at WHMC and we just had an Active Duty nurse PCS into here that got officer (Capt) base housing without any wait....they got to move right in.

They took an older unit, but he is pleased and the schools on Lackland are rated VERY high! I am not sure how this will play out in 2010, but that is the current info for moving on base if you are willing to accept an older unit (and they are pleased with where they were assigned). Again, that is at the Capt level.

Hope this helps! Welcome to SA...you will enjoy this tour I am sure!

First and foremost, delete your email from your post and ask people to direct message (DM) you if they want. The moderators will eventually do this, but it is easier if you take care of it.

Secondly, I've PCS'd here twice and neither time would I have bothered to check on the availability of on-base officers quarters. The rental market is too big and there are many nice places to live to make living on base worthwhile. Not that it is anything bad, but the schools offbase are pretty good and we would rather enjoy the community experience than to be surrounded by nothing but other military families. There are tons of neighborhoods within a half hour's drive or less, and with a good realtor you should find a nice place easily.

SA is a great place, especially for families. We purposely came back here a second time because I knew I would retire during this assignment. I hope you enjoy your time here as much as we did and still do!

Cheers! M2

I called before we moved here and the housing office told me that they were 1960s-built, 1400 SF, and with carports (at least that was what was available). I'm not sure how accurate this was, but after that description I didn't care to investigate further. Good luck!!

Not sure how to delete the email, but it was a bad idea hindsight.
My wife is a captain, so thats good news. We really like base housing where we are at, and really enjoy the community. Were both northerners and are a bit bummed out to be moving so far south, but are going to try and make the best of it.

I agree with tripple M...look off base, four years is more than enough time to buy, if your're scared then rent.
Come here on a permissive tdy 60 days or so before you pcs and find a place then you can move strait in, that is what we did and I am much happier off base.

I am a MSgt and off base housing here is very affordable...

We were offered on-base housing when we were here on our first tour (hubby was a 1Lt at the time)...it was horrible and our small apartment was larger than the 2 bd/1ba house they offered.

This time we didn't even consider on base. We live in a decent neighborhoood...probably not to everyone's liking...but I think its nice. We have a 4 year old and I don't feel the least bit unsafe. AND we currently rent for $350 below our BAH. Works well for us. Especially considering we are upsidedown SEVERAL hundreds of dollars a month on the house we own in VA compared to what we rent it out for, but that's a whole other story.

I hope you will enjoy San Antonio.... I love it and could not wait to get back here from when we left 8 years ago.

My DH is from Vermont and he loves it here too. Give it a chance.
Of course, he married a Texan, so he really had no choice. Poor fella.
