I feel very badly for the family, I am more than sure the parents and the grandmother feel exceptionally guilty. Who knows how immense the guilt and pain they are suffering right now, and sadly deservedly so. It was a tragic error in judgement on the grandmother's part. I always hear these stories, and it always goes along with "Well the dog never hurt anyone or acted agressive before." Dogs are animals and their behavior is subject to change at the drop of a hat, regardless of how they "always acted" previously.
Very true. Sadly, people die due to ignorant negligence all too often. Especially children.
Our wuss of a pit-mix has never hurt a fly (literally), never growled at anyone, nor shown ANY signs of agression to any person (or our two small, napoleon-complex-havin' dogs) and DH and I both know that DD is never to be left alone with the pit-mix (well, never left alone with ANY of the dogs actually)... even just to "run into the other room".
perticusrex, you honestly are a much better person that I am. I'm still so hopping mad at the grandmother (and the parents, since they knowingly left the child in her care), that I'm having a hard time feeling bad for them. I hope I get to the point that I can truly feel sorry for them. (I'm working on trying to be more of a forgiving person. )
And YEP again mpd33!! If it's not one breed, it could easily be another! And the PC's could be even more dangerous if improperly bred and owned!
Heck, we have a Boxer/American Bull Dog (NOT the same as a "pit bull") mix that is the goofiest, most loving dog around. She LOVES my kids, loves to be cuddled, let's them "ride" her like a horse, "break dances" (chances her tail and ends up spinning around on the floor). She's a total dork and is totally lovable. I'd NEVER leave her alone with my kids! She's extremely strong and doesn't know her own strength. That's all it would take. AND, with irresponsible ownership/training, she could be the next one on the news.
(OK, my blood is boiling. I gotta stay outta this thread. I'll start crying.)

You have those, too?!!! LOL!!!! That's our little dog, too!!! He's such a little bully, follows the Boxer mix around, trying to be a "big man" (which of course the Boxer loves ~ they are best friends) and bullies the Husky. HE'S also not to be trusted alone with the kids! (OK, now I'm REALLY gonna get outta this thread. LOL!)
Sorry, Michael Vick may have--or should I say 'had'--money; but he is low income in every other sense of the term...
Anyone who thinks he deserves $10 million per season as an ex-con who had a career quarterback rating of 75.7 before he went to jail is dillusional. He's spent the last nine months sitting in a jail cell and eating prison food, and I hope he was someone's "friend" during that time because if anyone deserved that kind of "personal attention," he did ; so I very much doubt he is going to emerge from prison in any shape to step onto a football field and play at a $10M/season level. He wasn't that good to begin with!
Heck, he should be grateful that the NFL even lets him play again (I thought he was indefinitely banned anyway, wasn't he?)
Cheers! M2
ummm...just to make it clear, i was not defending him at all...the poster i was responding to had mentioned pits being owned by low income people --- regardless of Vick's background, he still had money at the time, making him far from low income in the economic form...and that is what i was speaking of...i was not trying to justify his past or his future or how much he is paid after the mess he got himself into...

Never said you did, I just wanted to clarify that simply having money does not equate to having class, morals, respect, etc. There are a lot of rich people who are "low income" acting, such as Vick and Mark Cuban...
I got my Shih Tzu when my daughter was 2, I wouldn't even leave her alone with my child let along a big dog like that.
I don't fault the breed, I fault the people taking care of them and the baby.

You can feel sorry and be forgiving - but there is a level of accountability that must be had in cases like this. Until people realize that the owners will be held responsible - there will no end to the stupid tragic accidents like this. I stand by my original post. The grandmother should be locked up for negligent homicide. What happened to that little innocent child is just terrible. Someone needs to be held accountable. Those dogs are killers at heart. Would you leave a house trained cobra in with the kids? Would you leave a loaded gun in the crib with a baby? I see no difference. Clearly - the fact is - those dogs attacked that poor baby and mauled her to death. I have a seven month old son and can not begin to imagine the horror that little girl went through and would want any person responsible for doing that to my son thrown in jail...even if it was my relative.
Of course I would never leave my child in a place like that.
The latest Westcreek HOA Newsletter (Apr-Jun 09) has an article written by a resident who he and his wife and dogs were attacked by a pit bull in the Westcreek Sports Park in Dec 08. The dog was captured and turned over to Animal Control and eventually returned to the owner. Anyway, he visited the Animal Shelter afterwards and they told him 90% of the dogs who are turned in for biting were pit bulls. Of interest, he is now starting a petition to prohibit pit bulls in Westcreek, and the HOA is endorsing this as they allowed a petition to be printed in the newsletter, or you can sign one at the HOA office.

Those are friends of ours. I will be signing that petition. What if there were kids attacked, instead of dogs?
