In our never-ending internet quest to find places to relocate in the Austin or San Antonio area, we're considering checking out Canyon Lake.

It seems that San Antonio and the surrounding area has more family-friendly activities than Austin and its surrounding areas, but since we haven't actually been there yet (we will be there for 4 days in about 2 1/2 weeks), it's hard to tell. Internet research is helpful, but pales in comparison to actually visiting.

Since we only have 4 days, we would like to try and narrow down our search as much as possible so we're not just aimlessly driving all over the place!

We are currently in a somewhat outlying suburb of the Phoenix area that has a population of about 50,000 and is self-sustaining with all the big box stores, etc. We are looking for a change; someplace a little out of the urban areas so we can get at least an acre, but don't want to be so far away that going to the grocery store is a major production. The big box stores don't have to be in the immediate area, maybe with 20-25 minutes or so ~ that way we can make a trip every couple weeks and just get all the big shopping done (Costco, Babies R Us, Target, etc).

We would also like to eventually put our 6-mo old son in a Christian school and it seems like there are at least a couple in the immediate area.

We will also look to attend a bible-based church, as we are very involved with our church here and will miss it dearly.

Any input on this area would be appreciated!!

Canyon Lake might be a bit more than 20-25 minutes from significant commerce, judging from what others who posted here have said. Here are a few previous threads that may help.

Canyon Lake/Windcrest Commute

Would you commute from Canyon Lake?

New Braunfels and Canyon Lake living?

Medina Lake VS. Canyon Lake

CAnyon Lake, which shore, New Braunfels??? Where to live for schools?

New Braunfels or Canyon Lake

Which is better: Canyon or Medina Lake Areas

Default Canyon Lake

We have lived on the south side of Canyon Lake for about 20 years. Very quiet and isolated. Down side for kids include very long bus rides to school, and friends very spread out. Major shopping is about 30-45 minutes away. Commute into San Antonio is really long. Check out the Boerne area. I think you will find what you are looking for there.

Default Thank you!

Thank you so much for your replies!

Sounds like even as beautiful as it looks, yes, it might be a bit remote for us.

I really appreciate the input and can't wait to visit in a couple weeks!

Default suggestion

We just moved here from Glendale, AZ! We are in Cibolo, near Schertz. We have been attending the Church of Christ in New Braunfels. It takes about 15 minutes to get there and the people have been great.
Maybe check out New Braunfels.

Nice! How long have you been there and how are you liking it compared to the west valley?

New Braunfels is actually towards the very top of our list, as they have the New Braunfels Christian Academy that's K-12 and seems to get very high rankings.

It's a good move- There seems to be so much more to do here. There's something going on every weekend! Like the Poteet Strawberry Festival, Seguin days, just drive to Canyon Lake, Gruene, so much more interesting than Phx. The trees are wonderful! The weather is different so far- clouds in the morning, what looks like fog sometimes- it reminds me of LA where I grew up. There are restaurants, etc that have been here for generations and we are enjoying that too. A lot more culture than Phx that's for sure.

That's so nice to hear from someone else who came from here, because that's exactly the impression that we got and what we're hoping for.

Can't wait for the GREEN!!!
