I'm thinking about buying land in the area (actually in Lytle) which will need to have a septic system installed. What do you think is the average cost of installing a system in sandy soil? How much did it cost you? What are some things I should consider as far as deciding what kind of system I need? I know I will ultimately have to talk to a contractor to know these things for sure, but I just wanted to get a (very) general idea of costs and troubles with septic systems in the San Antonio area.

Hopefully others can fill in the other information. When we dig holes for septic we charge $45 an hour on our tractor. A backhoe will be needed, and the price should be comparable. You're probably looking at around 10-15 hours at least. This is a ballpark assumption and depends completely on what size you are going for and whether you run into rock (jackhammer is also $45 per hour).

We are having a conventional system installed tomorrow in the Medina Lake area and we are paying $5,500. That is the total from start to finish. We are on rock, but found a place for the tank just to the left of the rock shelf. Although aerobic systems have become more popular and in some areas are required by HOA's, etc., we are very thankful we were able to install a conventional system.
