Default Veteran's family needs help resolving issue with Wal-Mart purchase

Where do I start? My love and I are a young couple. He is 22, I am 23. We came to BAMC (Brooke Army Medical Center), Fort Sam Houston, Texas, not on the best of terms. We reccently moved into a two bedroom apartment. We only have enough furniture for a one bedroom apartment so decided to get a futon for the extra room. Easy enough right? Nope. We thought about it and decided on Wal-Mart... online ordering so they would deliver. If they brought it to me, I could put it together. It finally gets here and I'm thrilled, this is the last step in putting our new home together. Well what do you know it's defective. Oh boy! I messaged walmart.com and said they could give me $15 back or we could take it either to the store or to the post office. Hmmm... well BOTH those options involve Matthew and myself working to rectify the situation we DID NOT create. Have I mentioned yet that Matt lost his legs (yup both of them) during Operation Iraqi Freedom? Neither one of us can move this thing... no way!! So fine, online they can hide. No face to face contact makes it easier to say you're on your own. I get in touch ( or try to anyway) with the general manager at our local store. She is not available although everyone wants their own version to my problem. Then she doesn't even have the common courtesy to call me back herself. Wal-Mart prides themselves so much on helping vets and supporting their troops... well here we are!! Then they have the nerve to be like uhhh well doesn't he have any friends. Hello!!!!! I'm not sure he has a friend around here who has all their limbs.. again we don't know a lot of people here, we weren't stationed here by choice and we did not create this. Now I am disappointed, unsatisfied and there IS NOTHING ANYONE CAN DO FOR US!

I am sorry to hear of your troubles. I find it appalling the store manager can't be bothered to call you back or that those you talked to were so insensitive and rude. Perhaps you could try another store, but definitely fire off a letter to the home office. I've always found them to be very accommodating with returns, but then, I didn't have the situation you have.

I checked the Walmart.com website and it seems as if you were given bad information from the email. I hope this can help you to return your item and get satisfaction. Depending on how it was shipped, you could arrange for the carrier to pick it up so you don't have to take it anywhere. If you do want to take it back to the store, try checking with some of your contacts/support group at BAMC to see if perhaps one of them would volunteer their truck or SUV to help out. As a last resort, you could rent a vehicle from Home Depot, if you can get it on the truck with the aid of a neighbor or BAMC friends. You could also take this issue to the media, since all the TV stations here have consumer reporters that take on these kind of issues.

I understand you are here not by choice, but please understand that by and large, San Antonio is very caring of her military personnel. I do thank Matthew for his service to our country and am very sorry that he suffered such a great loss. My nephew just turned 22 and was also injured in Iraq, though he was not injured as badly as Matt. He has since been medically discharged from the Army and if he lived anywhere nearby, I know he would help out a fellow soldier. We don't have a truck, so we can't help, either. Good luck and please let us know who it turns out.

This is what I found:

Walmart.com: Help: Returns Policy

Returns Exceptions
Here are the exceptions to our general Returns Policy:
Oversize Items
Some heavy or large items that are identified as oversize on their item pages may be returned to a store or by freight shipping. Under some circumstances, you may be charged for return shipping. To return an item by freight, please email Customer Service. They will also be able to inform you of any return shipping costs.
Damaged or Defective Items
If an item you receive is damaged or defective you can return the item to a Wal-Mart store or return it by mail for a full refund. If returning the item via mail, please follow the procedures listed in Return an Item by Mail, choose the appropriate return reason code from the dropdown and choose the option of refund or replacement.

Walmart.com - Always Low Prices!

Return an Item by Mail
To return an item by mail:

1. Include the item you wish to return along with all original packing materials and accessories.
2. Print a return label from this site. Without this label we will be unable to process the return. If you do not have a printer, please return the item to a store.
3. Use the "Return by Mail" button below for further instructions on mailing your item.

About Mail Returns

* The mail return process can take 2 to 3 weeks
* Once we receive your item, we will either credit your original method of payment or ship you a replacement item, based on your request.
* If there was an error on our part related to your order, we will issue a credit for any applicable shipping and gift-wrapping charges
* There are restrictions for returns based on item size, materials, departments, etc. For more information, please see the Returns Policy.
* We recommend that you insure your package and ship it via a trackable carrier method. Wal-Mart cannot replace or provide credit for any item lost during return shipping.
* Wal-Mart cannot replace or provide credit for a returned item that is incongruent with the brand, specifications, item description or condition of your original purchase(s).
