78232 is also a good one, homes will be less expensive than 78248.
That's what I was thinking since there are a bunch of houses in the 300-400K range around there.

I make it from home over there (78248) to work south of downtown, door to door, in just over 20 minutes.

You might also want to look slightly north of 1604 up I-10. You start to get into the hill country, the landscape is beautiful and there is a breeze every evening all summer long. I live off Boerne Stage Road and I-10 and I'm 25 minutes to downtown, even with the backup between 1604 and DeZavala. I leave b/w 7:15 -7:30 in the morning. Traffic is even a little lighter after 8:00. Evening is sometimes 30-35 minutes. Neighborhoods with homes b/w $300K-$400K up there include the Dominion (where you can now get houses below $400K thanks to the foreclosures), Stonewall Ranch (5-7 years old), Stonewall estates (new homes), River Rock Ranch (new homes), Two Creeks (new) and Crownridge (a mix of home ages). Freeway access is quick for all of those subdivisions. The shopping is excellent in that area as well with The Rim and La Cantera.
