Default affordable retirement towns outside of San Antonio

Will be relocating to Texas after our home is sold. Not sure where we will be retiring yet, looking into Granbury, Tyler and maybe something outside of San Antonio. Looking to spend about 130,000 on a home and looking for a small safe area, would like to get into a newer small home about 1400 sq ft and one level.

Can anyone tell me of any towns that are nice, safe and affordable.

LaVernia might be a nice place to look. I think Boerne might be too pricey.

Hill Country towns, with the exception of Kerrville, may be too pricey. The tax rates are crazy. Any other town not expensive is too far and/or remote for most people (Mason, Junction, Harper, etc).

Humm, I'm not sure I'd count Castroville as part of the Hill Country, but it does have some hills.

Good call on Bandera and Pipe Creek, definitely hills, but Pipe Creek is starting to suck as a place to live.

We also are looking at retirement in Texas. We are coming from Chicago and are wondering if anyone could give their opinion on Kerrville vs. Georgetown as a nice retirement location. That would be Georgetown, not
counting the Del Webb community - I don't think we really want all the
rules associated with that.
I guess we are mostly interested in cost of living, cost of housing,
friendliness of the people toward "yankees", things to do etc.
Thanks
