The parades are wonderful family events. GartenFest at Beethoven Hall is a fun family event, too.

Don't forget the King William Parade and Street Fair. It's the most family friendly event in all of Fiesta. The parade is at 9 AM and the fair is until about 3 or so.

If you want to see the King William parade, get there well before 9:00. The parade is AWESOME.

Since you are new in town, the River Parade (this Monday night so hurry!) would probably be the most unique and fun for a 14 year old......and for mom and dad too. Go to the Fiesta Store and talk to them about strategy for parking (for any event). The River Parade will be crowded....so go early...but reserved seats are the best if you can find any. Most of the restaurants along the river have reserved seating....it may be a little expensive, but not outrageous. Dining and relaxing and not fighting the crowd is sooooo worth it. Being at night, it's also cooler.

Runner up for us is the Battle of the Flowers Parade. Really SOOO much fun and you get the area schools and even out of town bands and lots of excitement. Again....reserved seats are best....and try for the shaded side of the street. The Fiesta Queen and her court will all be in their gowns with incredible trains that are truly works of art! It will be hotter....but the route is larger and easier to find parking.

FYI....Next Saturday is the Fiesta Flambeau Parade....another fun parade, but we have always been Fiesta-ed out by that time. It's at night and many of the floats have torches and are lit up and glittery. It has never been our favorite, but MANY people LOVE this one.

Here's a link to the seating available for these three parades. Street Chair Information :: Fiesta 2009 Official Website

I have a question about today's parade vs. the King William parade tomorrow.

Does the Battle of Flowers parade really last 3 hours? Could I show up around 1:30ish towrds the end of the route and still get a glimpse, or would I basically have to be there camped out at 10am? My kids would be bored out of their minds if we had to sit and wait that long.

Is the King William parade a good alternative? As/not as crowded?

Thanks!!

Pretty much people start lining up in the morning (and for the really, really prime spots families camp out overnight), so showing up at 1:30 wouldn't really get you that close. You'd have to at least have somebody holding you a spot from about right now forward.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I read great reviews about this event and was really looking forward to it. Personally, I will never attend A taste of New Orleans again! It was more like "An aftertaste of New Orleans!" The venue was too small for the crowds and booths. They advertised that this was a family event, yet there was nothing set up for the children except a table selling toys/trinkets. Having lived in New Orleans for a brief period, I found the food at this event to be little more than typical carnival food and nothing in comparison to the real thing. To top it all off, I was only there for 1.5 hours (during daylight hours) and someone tried to break into my vehicle in the parking garage adjacent to Sunken Gardens! They damaged the handle/lock on the passenger door, which is going to cost me approx. $200 to fix. I'm glad we got out of there before the fight broke out, which resulted in gunfire! From now on, when I want a "Taste of New Orleans" I'll just make the trip to LA.
