If you are hungry for Mexican Food one of the best places around is Herbert's in San Marcos. It's on Riverside right off of the freeway on the west side of IH35. If you're going north you will have to take an exit and do the turn around then make a right on Riverside. Sorry I can't remember which exit to take. I think it may be the exit for the highway going to Luling. Here is their website. Best hot sauce in Texas!

Tex-Mex food, restaurant. San Marcos, TX

From there the drive along Devil's Backbone is beautiful....but you'll have to wind around some to get back to Gruene and New Braunfels. I ditto what the others said about Gruene and New Braunfels. Landa Park is wonderful if it's not too crowded. Lots of natural springs just bubbling out of the rocks and lots of shade. Beautiful!
Second vote for Saltlick....OMG this place is WONDERFUL!!!! BYOB if you want beer, best BBQ you have EVER had in your life....GO HUNGRY!

Thanks for the Salt Lick recommendations, I actually live in SW Austin, only 8 miles from the SL, we love it.
