Dogs with skin allergies
I was reading the recent thread about vet recommendations & noticed one of the posters mentioning their dog with skin allergies. I am curious to know who else is dealing with this and what regimen your pet is on (if any) to try to combat it.
My mother has a toy poodle who suffers from this. I am staying with her right now and my heart just breaks to see how HARD he scratches himself sometimes just to relieve the itch. he is being treated by Dr. Chow at Babcock North. His daily regimen includes Atopica 25 mg, 1/2 tab Claritin, and I just recently started him on a daily Omega-3 capsule (which incidentally, is HUGE and must be pierced and the oil smeared on a piece of cheese for him to take). He is also on Simplicef for 3 weeks for a Staph infection (he usually gets this about once a year). We are also vigilant about Frontline and giving him weekly baths. As far as progress, he has improved significantly since before he started all this (almost a year ago), but he still scratches from time to time throughout the day and continues to exhibit the telltale signs of licking his paws and rubbing his muzzle.
I am aware that his allergies are not something we can cure, only try to control. we have not done allergy testing due to the expense involved, but I am positive there is a grass allergy in there since he seems to have itch attacks after going outside. I have started washing his paws once he comes back in if he has been in the grass.
Just wanted to hear your experience if you have this issue.

We are fighting a losing battle with this too. My poor dog gets shots, takes the Omega 3, and is on Benadryl. We had him on Frontline, but still fleas. Now he's on Vectra?, i believe. This has helped him more than the Frontline.

I've been wondering if a dog could take Claritin and I guess I now know the answer. I'm not sure if mine has allergies or what, but she used to scratch around her eyes until they would bleed. She's been on Prednisone most of her life and that is the only thing that has made a difference so far. I also give her one Benadryl, but I'm not sure if that is making any difference. However, we still are not sure if she is suffering from allergies. She wheezes bad when she gets excited and she used to scratch bad, so it appears to be allergies, but those medicines alone would not help her much at all. A lot of vets have issues with Prednisone and I can understand, but I personally think it is worth the other issues in her case. She's a very sick dog and probably would've never made it in most other situations, but we're making life as pleasant as possible for her and she's very happy. She just can't keep up with her sister and the other psycho's in the house.
BTW, I have been giving her probiotics in pill form for about a month now and she is currently in the best condition she has ever been in. I don't know if the probiotics helped, but it appears to have made a difference and I've read online that it has helped other dogs when everything else failed. Besides, it's not like it can hurt anything.

Our dog has always licked his paws so we never thought anything of it. But recently he's been biting at a spot on his back which has led to a sore and huge scab. He'll go at it, biting the hell out of himself until we tell him to stop. I was thinking about putting Neosporin on it and keeping it wrapped so it will heal. I'm wondering if this is maybe allergies as well.

Go to Locke Hill Feed Store and tell them.....they will most likely sell you a topical fungicide (it's about $6 for a spray bottle of it) and that should fix your doggy up. Take your dog with you and they can look at it--they're not vets, but they know their stuff. It's dog-friendly in there, of course, when they're on a leash. Good luck!

I have a friend who uses Neosporin to heal the scabs on her dog when he chews himself to a raw mess. If your dog does this only once in a while, try what Sapphire suggested. If it is more common, take him/her to the vet--they may be able to prescribe a course of steriods to help (usually it is prednisone or prednisolone). If doggie is doing the biting frequently--meaning almost year-round--he may indeed suffer from allergies.

Probiotics in pill form? What's that or can I get a brand name please. I'm checking out all options for my poor little allergic dog!
