commute from downtown? (Houston, Dallas, San Antonio: rentals, buying a home, neighborhood) - Texas (TX) - City-Data Forum

We are relocating to San Antonio and my husband will be working downtown. I see that most people reccommend the north central area to live, and what i've seen looks nice. Can anyone tell me what the commute is from there? We are renting a home because we still own our house in Dallas, and we have two small kids so we want good schools. I have seen the other threads on relocating but i need commute info. thanks!

Well, lots of folks head that way in the mornings, so it ain't going to be pretty.
You need to provide times so that the question can be answered properly. What happened to NM?

I commute that way everyday. From the 1604/10 area at about 8:15 in the morning it takes me 25 minutes. Anything earlier could add close to 15 minutes.

Heading home is a nightmare in rush hour. be prepared to get stuck in traffic once you hit Wurzbach. I plan to stay late just to avoid bad traffic. If I leave my office at about 6 I can get home at about 6:25-6:30. If I leave the office at 5 I get home at about 5:30/5:50.

That's taking 10 all the way to downtown. I don't know anything about the route on 281 or 35 though. I would expect those to be about the same, though.

Depends on how far up North Central you are looking. If you are commuting from say 1604 to Commerce street in the morning rush... Maybe half an hour to 45. San Antonio is nothing like Houston/Dallas as far as traffic jams go, unless you have to actually drive on 1604 for any length on the north side.

I live up I-10 just past 1604 (Dominion Drive). I leave at 7:15 and get downtown at 7:45. In the afternoon it's more like 35 minutes. The heaviest traffic is between 1604 and Huebner in both directions. There are several subdivisions with rentals up that way and the elementary school is exemplary - Leon Spring Elementary.

When I worked downtown, it was an easy non-freeway commute from my rental in Alamo Heights. And the schools there, I hear, are good.

traffic here is light years better than dallas. the only really bad places I know of are 281 north of 1604 and some places in stone oak in general. commuting on i-10 is easier than 281, imo.

also, since you are interested in schools, make sure the schools were you decide to rent are not capped. that was new to us when we moved down here. as a general rule, more schools in north east isd are capped vs. northside (I don't know of any northside schools that are capped, but I have not checked recently). the school district sites should have that info.

and, yes, alamo heights has good schools and would be an easy commute. but it costs $$. renting might be more affordable, but you would need to decide if you want to change schools later on if buying a home there is too expensive. (which it is for most people)

Thanks, everyone! we ended up in Stone Oak in a great neighborhood. The drive will be a little longer, but he only will be travelling during peak times on occasion so it will be worth it. i appreciate all the info! good to know what you're getting into!

my husband was offered a job we just couldn't turn down. i just got back from our house hunting trip and i can't wait to get down there! now i have to wait a month! guess i'd better get packing!
