Is San Antonio right for me?
Hi people of San Antonio,
Please help advise me! Tell me if you think I'll fit in and if you think this move is right for me:
I'm hoping to move to SA from TN in a couple months; I will do a summer accelerated teacher class and (hopefully) get a teaching job (I have to get a job and teach a yr to complete liscensing).
• How is the job market other than the teaching market? (In case I have trouble finding work.)
• Lots of crime against women?
Here's me:
Polite (southern), a bit shy, live in a town of 100,000, which is comfy for me, I like old, unique houses, I have two dogs for which I need a nice yard, I'm a single woman in mid 20s, love Mexican food, hate machismo, racism, sexism, and I'm hoping to start a life in a new city, make laid-back friends, and generally have a relaxed life (drinking margaritas, good conversations with friends, and watching scrubs is my life). As a woman, my concern is mostly up and moving alone to a new city (I don't want to be a target). Please don't take this offensively, but I'm from an area where there aren't really integrated Mexicans, only illegals, who are really aggressive (sometimes) and machismo: I know that SA is like 60% hispanic, do you find there is a lot of male aggression? Thanks for your advice in advance!

Just a comment. There is a huge difference b/w Hispanics and Mexicans, so I've found in Arizona and even Here.

A mexican is someone born in Mexico, not just someone with hertiage to Mexico or someone with brown skin.
There are plenty of people in this city who say they're Mexican but their family is 4-5 generation American.
Don't get that confused with nothing more than a label.

I met people like that when I lived in Houston. Some had never been to Mexico before (their great-grandparents were the ones who migrated to the U.S.).

Yeah, there are about 50,000-70,000 (documented) Mexicans living in San Antonio.
True mexicans. However, in the media or in someones personal life they'll claim Mexican when they're just hispanic Americans.

See, it may seem like apples and oranges, but people have the same conversations about light and dark skinned blacks. Black is black and Mexican is Mexican. If they want to call themselves Mexican, let them. Don't come up with your own definition of the word because they will get pissed off. Same thing as calling blacks African Americans. Most have never been to, let alone know anything about Africa. If it's in their family, that's what they are.
