I've lived here over 40 years, grew up with this water, and have never had a water softener. I think it tastes great. Many people I know only like the water from their hometowns and none other. I've never experienced a strong chlorine smell in the water.
However, when I am cleaning, I often wish that I had a water softener because of the hard water build-up and the film. We were having trouble with our dishwasher and the repairman recommended LemiShine to prevent the build-up in the drain that can cause problems.

Whenever my mom visits from CA, she says the same thing. She loves our water!

I've noticed a heavy chlorine smell, but not all the time. Only occasionally, and then it's overpowering.
I don't like the taste, but I also don't like the taste of the water where I grew up in SoCal - both are very hard. I don't use it for drinking or making drinks like tea/coffee.

I drink tap water here all the time and after 12 years, I'm used to it. I only notice the difference after I've been home in Illinois for vacation. The water here is ugly and comes out of the tap lukewarm, which is annoying.
I grew up drinking well water - nothing compares to that! Then I lived in St. Louis, where the tap water was really really tasty.
I've never noticed an odor to the water and probably would stop drinking it unfiltered if I did.

I dont know if the water in Cibolo is from the same place as the tapwater in SA, but it was so gross over there IMO. At least where we lived, it always seemed murky and the taste was like dirty water (yes ive tasted dirty water ...dont ask) We had to use a filter. Since we moved to SA the water is still kinda yuck IMO but it looks better. We dont drink it unfiltered though. I would like to invest in a water softener cause I always feel like Im scrubbing the tubs and toliets. Does the flouride have anything to do with the taste?

Recently had some tap water in Frisco/Plano area and it had a HORRIBLE smell. Those I was visiting would only drink bottled water.

We spent a weekend at some camping thing near Leakey, and that water was horrid - it stank to high heaven. I would've had to been REALLY thirsty to drink it. As it was, I didn't even want to bathe in it. Yuck.

I imagine the chlorine levels are going to be highly variable around town. My understanding is that the water system, is basically a bunch of little water systems centered around Edwards Aquifer wells. Chlorine will be added at each of these little water systems causing variability due to configuration changes. Also holding tank sizes, etc could figure into chlorine needs...

I miss having a water softener. I use one of those Brita filters on the kitchen faucet, and use Jet Dry in the dishwasher to keep the spots down. Has anyone tried that new kind of detergent pouch with the Jet Dry already in it? That would be nice if it worked.
