What impressed me even more than her artwork was her eloquence and insight in the caption that accompanies the photo. Kudos to her parents and teachers for fostering such a creative and enlightened child!

Oh....dunno. And while I agree with you about the lack of emphasis on the arts in schools....she is naturally talented and perhaps her parents provided lessons. I just can't see a public school taking a lot of credit for what she's done, even though they get a nice prize.

I actually remember having a really good art program in elementary and middle school, but by high school the art classes were pretty unimaginative and weak.

I can't complain about NISD much, either. In elementary my son had his artwork displayed at the Leon Valley fair thing they have...in NEISD it was on display at Blossom, and now in middle school his band is amazing. Great band leaders, terrific boosters, it's so much fun!

NEISD has art programs in middle school and high school, but no Art Specialists in the elementary schools. However, NISD has art teachers in their elementary schools. I don't know about the other disticts

At NEISD, the elementary classroom teachers do art instruction along with everything else. Both of my kids have had their art displayed at Blossom in the district-wide art shows too!

Music still seems to be a very strong program in the schools. I just worry that the fine arts are not getting enough emphasis because of the TAKS.

wow...that's crazy. You'd think they would have used all the finalists and at least rotated them. At least she'll benefit from her awards for a while....and the trip to DC must have been a wonderful experience. But it seems Google got their free exposure and then went on their merry way.

I agree. Maybe seeing that a school was awarded $25K will inspire them to take a bit more interest in the arts.

I had incredible art teachers in high school. One is still teaching!
And I had quite a few works on display at Blossom. And we're talking about the dark ages! Glad that is still going on.
