Default We are looking to move to San Antonio soon...

Hey all! My wife and I are looking to relocate to San Antonio. We currently live in Fort Wayne, Indiana and are growing tired of the cold winters and not warm enough summers.. =). Anyway, we are looking into moving soon and I have a few concerns / problems that I was hoping I could get some insight on. First problem is: I've heard it's hard to look for jobs while not living in the area you want to move to. Has anyone tried a placement agency? Do they help out of staters like me? Next, looking for a place to live...where in San Antonio is considered the "good" part of town? I have visited before and we stayed on the north/northeast side. We are not sure of our budget for a house yet, but that will come along when I get my job situation figured out a little bit better.

Any insight from folks who have relocated and went "blind" so to speak?

Thank you much!!

I say welcome to san antonio. summers here are hot and sometimes chilly, winters are not that cold but once a while it freezes up. anyways i can't tell you what part of town is the best, it's all a matter of choice and cultural preferences.

Unless you're open to waiting tables and delivering pizzas until something in your field opens up, I wouldn't recommend moving anywhere without a job. The job market is tight here, too.

Plus, without a good job, you'll have to foot the bill to have your household goods moved!

I'm with the above posters.. find a great job before you just up and move. You could look for jobs from San Antonio, up i-35, toward DFW or east toward Houston.

You are tired of the winters, I can definitely relate! Given what you want for climate, you have a lot of choices to include Southern California, AZ, NM, TX, Florida, etc. If I was going to move, I wouldn't limit myself to one particular city and then try to find a job. I'd find a region or climate, like you've done, and then find a job in one of those areas.

We'd love to have you in SA but I don't think you want to get here and then have to move back because there are no jobs here in your field!

Indy, start looking and applying online for jobs. That's your first step. Most companies will fly you down for an interview if they're interested.

I agree wholeheartedly with the posters who said not to move 'til you have a job. Seriously, I know they keep talking about how Austin and SA weren't hit as hard by the recession, etc., but we're hurting too. We've had our share of layoffs. Now's not the time to just move willynilly with nothing lucrative lined up.

That being said, I do wish you the best of luck and I hope in a few months you're back telling us you're ready to move! I moved here to San Antonio from Illinois and the mild winters MORE than make up for the long hot summers (not that I don't whine about the heat!).
