I am a foodie ex-NY'er , who loves not good but great food. But through my adventures I have come to realize price doesn't always reflect quality or good taste in many cities. Please let me know your favorite San Antonio choices in 2009 for 3 price levels: 'high end', 'middle of the price road', and 'cheap but amazing'.
My personal choices are:
High end: Le Reve
Middle: Bistro Vatel, Olorosa
Cheap but amazing: Druther's for lunch, Ciao (maybe not so cheap)

Sorry, I'll try this again with your price levels...

* Low (< 10$/plate)
Mad Hatters - breakfast/lunch
El Sol - breakfast/lunch
Pizza Italia - thank the good lord it's reopening this summer!!

* Moderate ( 10-20$/plate)
Acenar - 10-15$/plate TexMex.. good to take visitors here. about the same price but much better Riverwalk food.
Saltgrass - a good, affordable, steak
Piatti's - they had the most amazing lobster-filled ravioli with a vodka cream sauce... mmmm... but it's not a usual item
Stone Werks - ahi tuna salad is good and it's a nice place to sit outside and have a drink (a little pricey on the drinks tho)
La Fonda on Main - how could I forget! I think they have the best beef fajitas around! A really nice atmosphere too.

* Expensive (> 20$/plate)
Citrus - anniversaries/special occasions

We generally won't spend more than 30$ on a plate. I've been to Fogo's in Houston and it was great food but not worth the prices, IMHO.

That's about it honestly. I don't have very diverse taste buds. I do try to stay away from fast food, as much as possible. But who can resist McD's fries??

I'll have to try the restaurants you've mentioned. I've heard good things about Le Reve but I already refinanced my house this year and you can only do that once every 12 months.. maybe I'll go there next year!

I'm a foodie, so I could go on and on about restaurants and probably forgot some really good ones.

High End- Le Reve
Moderate- Scenic Loop (is this considered SA?), La Frite, Azuca, Dough, Brasserie Pavil
Cheap but Amazing- Sazon, The Cove, La Tuna, Madhatters, Piccalos, Turquoise Grill, Godai, Tiagos, Bigz, Asia Kitchen

If you want some amazing Mango Margaritas, hands down, Titos in Southtown have the best! I love that they put actual fruit in them! YUM!
