Recommendations for a good family-law attorney
The wife and I would like to update our wills, powers-of-attorney, etc., and are looking for a good but reasonably-priced local family-law attorney to help. The last time we just used fill-in-the-blank documents, but with a child now, it's much more complicated. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks, we're looking for the same! If you don't mind, pls let us know how your hunt goes and what the associated fees are.
We talked about using the off-the-shelf forms but we want to do something complicated with our daughter in case something happens to both of us -- kind of an "if X, then #1, else if Y, then #2, else #3" scenario. I want it to be valid for years to come and I have to take into account the health, financial situation, and location of various relatives. I think I could work out the mechanics of it but I don't know if it would pass muster if it was ever put to the test

Try uslegalforms.com for quick, easy, legal forms. There are things that require an attorney, but these "fill in the blank" forms are used by ALL attorneys. The concerns you have as a parent are addressed in the step by step forms...kinda like the turbo tax stuff for tax preps.
Check out the sight...you would be surprised at the services they offer. They are also recommended by Dave Ramsey, who I personally trust for financial advice.

Texas is a Holographic state, meaning that a will in Texas is legitimate as long as it meets very minimal criteria:
Quote:
A holographic will is a will and testament that has been entirely handwritten and signed by the testator. Normally, a will must be signed by witnesses attesting to the validity of the testator's signature and intent, but in many jurisdictions, holographic wills that have not been witnessed are treated equally to witnessed wills and need only to meet minimal requirements in order to be probated:- There must be evidence that the testator actually created the will, which can be proved through the use of witnesses, handwriting experts, or other methods.
- The testator must have had the intellectual capacity to write the will, although there is a presumption that a testator had such capacity unless there is evidence to the contrary.
- The testator must be expressing a wish to direct the distribution of his estate to beneficiaries.
