Coming from Detroit....and having lived in St. Louis, and Rochester, NY....

San Antonio could use some more soul...

There isn't enough variety if you ask me...not enough activities for all walks of life within the AA community. Typical clubs, which are far and few in between. Clubs aren't my forte so for me, that really isn't an incentive. You have to really seek out activities and the right circles to satisfy your urban fix.

Austin is much better, but that drive can get a little tired after so long.

I really hate arguing this point but here goes. SA is diverse. It's not as diverse or as notably diverse as other cities or metropolitan areas but make no mistake, it is diverse. You'll find all sorts of different races and ethnicity's in SA. Again, it may not be on par as other larger metros or cities but it's there.

I really don't understand this question (no offense to you) I see it all over these forums.

Every major city in the US is diverse. Even smaller towns are getting more and more diverse. I don't see why you can't live in a city and dislike it simply because you're in the minority.

Heck, I'm a minority in San Antonio (Over 70% Hispanic) and I don't dislike it for that reason. There are African Americans to be found on the East Side between Converse and Brooks City Base.

So which is it?

Lemonfresh says its' "55-60% Hispanic" and
Live Urban says it's "over 70% Hispanic"

That's a big disparity ...who is right? One of you is wrong.

Lemonfresh is correct. Shame on me! I forgot to count the Blacks and Asians who account for about 8.6%. Whites account for around 30% of the population.

San Antonio is 61.4% according to the 2000 Census but should be a little higher now due to a higher population increase than most other races and many Hispanics were counted in other races.

Dude, SA isn't over 70% Hispanic. Where'd you pull that number from, seriously?

Are we talking city or metro, metro is a much more valid/truer teller of demographics (and population, income, etc) than city.

For the metro, the hispanic population is just under 50%.

City, as of 2008 is between 54-55%.

Ok, since you are mixing some things in there, let's make things clear.

Yes, every single city and town in the US is diverse.
Ask a black/white couple how many of those places they'd feel comfortable visiting.
The largest cities in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama are "very diverse" but are also known for being very intolerant towards minorities.

San Antonio is not as diverse (White-Hispanic) as 1000s of towns and cities.
but I believe that any minority would be happy in San Antonio because San Antonio
(1) It's a tourist city = Used to seeing all kind of people
(2) Gets lots of tourists from Mexico and the Midwest = How many cities in the US get more foreign tourists that San Antonio?
(3) Has a huge military presence = There's all type of people in the military

FWIW, from Wikipedia:

At the 2005-2007 American Community Survey Estimates, the city's population was: [3]
  • 66.5% White (29.3% non-Hispanic White)
  • 7.1% Black or African American
  • 1.0% American Indian and Alaska Native
  • 2.4% Asian
  • 0.2% Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander
  • 25.4% some other race
  • 2.5% two or more races
  • 61.0% Hispanic or Latino of any race (most of them Mexican Americans).
That tells me that ~90% of SA is White or Hispanic. Less than 8% of the next group represented.

San Antonio is more segregated along economic lines than race but even that is less and less of an issue as cheap track housing and low income apartments are being built in every neighborhoods over the last 30 years.
