A Spanish sounding name would work, in Mexico or Spain. This is America. This is San Antonio, Texas. Hispanics in San Antonio speak English. Yes there's a small (very small) percentage that only speak Spanish but why pander to them?
Look, this isn't something against Mexico or Hispanics. If someone had suggested it be a Italian sounding name you'd get the same response only replace Mexico and Spain with Italy.

Name it whatever, but get the team...Austin named their soccer team the Aztecs, and nobody complained.

People are missing the point of this post. The name of the name is unimportant. I was referring more to the idea of San Antonio getting a NFl team.

I doubt the name of the team would be a factor.
BTW, do you know how many states have names in Spanish?
Bring a football team called “The p…….” and you’ll have ½ of San Antonio wearing hats with cat ears.

honestly as well as we supported the Saints when they were here for those few games after Katrina hit I could see how we would want a team. But taking a step back and looking at us being a smaller market city and how much disrespect we get from the NBA even when we win championships, I just dont see how we would be able to maintain with another team in town on a regular basis. I agree that the city is pretty much pro Cowboys and that a hometown team would take away from that but how long would it last? Because we wont be winning any games right away. Yes we have the alamodome but we all already know that its going to need upgrades for this and that. I hope that when the time is right we get a squad but with the way the spurs are hurting right now image what it would be like for them if they have to compete in their own city with another franchise.

I think the franchises would not compete with one another. Football season doesn't start until well after basketball is over, and basket ball doesn't really pick up until well after football ends. If anything they would compliment each other by rising city pride.

I agree it would be a good thing for the city IF it didn't cost us an arm and a leg to do it - a business consortium or an owner building a stadium would be great.
I'm not anti-football; I'm anti-raising taxes.

I remember the campaign to build the Alamodome very well. The pitch was that if The citizens of San Antonio agreed to build a suitable facility, San Antonio would be a shoo-in to snag one of the 1994 NFL expansion teams. In response to questions about why private funding couldn't be used to build the stadium, we were told San Antonio, unlike many other large cities, didn't have a corporate base with deep enough pockets to fund such a venture. (So tell me again, why would San Antonio be such a shoo-in? )
So here we are twenty years later, still without an NFL franchise. Without a regular tenant, the operating costs for the Alamodome have to be subsidized by the taxpayers. By today's standards, the facility would be considered marginal for the home of an NFL team.
But for a relocated team or startup in a small market like San Antonio, wouldn't the Alamodome be a pretty decent facility for at least the first few years? Do all communities to which NFL franchises are awarded have brand new state-of-the-art facilities ready to go on day one? Look at the Dallas Cowboys, they just retired a thirty-eight-year-old venue for a new one that is air-conditioned!

If anyone doubts San Antonio could support an NFL team and wouldn't shift their allegiance to the local team, just look at how this city support the Saints when they played here after hurricane Katrina.

Why is it sad? It was one of the four strongest teams in the ABA and thus the reason they were invited to join the NBA when the ABA was dissolved. It's not like it wasn't deserved.

A couple of fact corrections:
1. They asked for $10 million, and only $4 million of that is for the hockey facility.
2. The money is from the county, not the city.
( Spurs get OK for ice rink)

I stand corrected but if somebody wants to start an NFL team let them do it with their own money. Let them take up collections from all these folks who are willing to shell out money for a football team. Let the fans support it. Not the taxpayers. I'm sick up and fed with all of these rich entrepreneurs with their hands in my pockets. I could care less about a NFL team or hockey rink for a basket ball team why should I be forced to pay for it. Other business plans have to make it on their own merit. No profit, no more business. If it was such a great idea their would be investors coming out of the woodwork.
