Default Home Owner's Associations and San Antonio Area

Hi there,

When looking at for-sale listings for the San Antonio area, I notice a lot of houses are in neighborhoods that have HOA's. I currently live in the Northeast and we do not have HOA's...but, years back, I lived in Phoenix and became familiar with them. I don't really much care for HOA's.
I was just wondering if a majority of houses were in HOA's...or, is that something that is mainly found in the communities within the S.A. city limits (for example, if I looked in Boerne, New Braunfels....or La Vernia, would I have to deal with HOA's there, too?).

It's not that I leave piles of trash around my yard...or plan on painting my home some ugly shade of magenta...
I just HATE the politics (and nosey-ness) involved with HOA's and prefer to trust in myself to take care of my own property without the interference.

Thanks for any help!

Most HOA's are in fairly new/recent subdivison.

If you were to live in Highland Hills or Highland Park you'd have no HOA. If you lived in Northwood, you'd have no HOA. However if you moved into a subdivision built within the last 10 years, it will most likely have a HOA.

There are numerous areas in SA that do not have HOA's just like there are numerous areas in SA that do.
