So, here's my question. Is there any point on going to the builder and complaining? Anything we can do at all? Just suck it up and pay the $2800? We aren't the original owners of the house, but they are still building in our neighborhood. I'm really not sure what to do. Help!
You would really cry if you knew what THEIR cost is for that inside unit. It's crazy But I won't go there

You can try going to the builder but I doubt you will have any luck, I'm sorry to say. The manufacturer won't cover the unit because it was a bad install so if the builder covers it, he will be paying out of his pocket.

The unit they are taking out is still good right?? Who gets that? Tell him you'll sell him your old unit back .

I wish I could help you out more. All I can say is there are some very crooked service guys out there so get more opinions. BTW, do they charge for troubleshooting??

Thanks Txtrkgrl. I am thinking that there has to be a cheaper route than $2800! They charged me $69 for a service charge and $81 for a dx fee. Ug. I told hubby for $70 or $80, I think we should get a second opinion!

Oh, TXTrkgirl, they aren't putting a new unit in, just replacing the coil. So, yeah.

So...any recs on good AC people? I have a few...not sure who to use though. If you have one in mind, please let me know! Thx!

mentioning legal action is a good attention grabber, that's why.. otherwise they tend to think it's just a game and you're just another PITA customer. It worked for me when my a/c company suddenly tried to change the terms of their extended warranty and it has worked for me many other times in the past.
I would definitely get another opinion because that price is higher than what an outside coil replacement is and that's the big one. My inside coil replacement was under $800 and that was only 5 years ago, so it couldn't have increased that much. Then again you could have some special unit that costs a lot more, but I would still get at least one more opinion. You could also go with the original person that said it would be under warranty. Is the company that quoted the high price a person's name by any chance? a very famous person who is not related to the company

It worked for you because you had a warranty from them - therefore a legally binding contract.

If you have no contract and did not purchase from them...then you have nothing binding. Therefore they will not respond to the threat of legal action. The threat just makes the person look desperate - especially when there is no case.

You had a case - which is why they responded.

The chances of the technician or manager on duty being a lawyer is pretty slim and so are the chances of them having a good grasp on legal principals. Most people just don't like to hear anything that has to do with legal action and will do anything to make the situation go away. It's sorta like extortion, but I've always been a fan of the Machiavelli approach to getting things done..

Oh no, no, no don't pay $2800 just for the coil . That is crazy and apparently people are paying this amount . Maybe my dh should go out on his own and then I could quit my job .
