Wow lots of kolache experts in here.
Has anyone tried the Kolaches in Fredericksburg? They got some signs out there on main street.

Lucky,
Hello Fellow Czech.......
Zamykal Kolaches
You've got to give them a try at least once, the best I've ever had.
I bought some for mom on mothers day, and she said the kolaches were so good, they took her back to when her grandmother made them.
Calvert is not convenient to SA (between Waco and College Station), and I have never had these shipped, but I thought they were definitely worth mentioning again.

I've enjoyed the ones from Shipley (Bandera closer to 410) and a definite hat tip to the little Valero ones that come with a jalapeno on top. That is all sorts of yummy.
If you must leave San Antonio by way of 35 north, when you get to the small town of West, be sure to go into The Czech Stop. You'll find a huge variety and want to take several boxes home with you. I can feel myself getting fatter, just thinking about them.

I'll third, fourth, fifth, etc any Shipley's location in San Antonio. Although I've only had the ones from the Austin Highway location and the Wurzbach/Vance Jackson locacation and that was a long time ago.

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet! But, it is more "Texas" then it is "San Antonio."
My mother said that these kolachs are too sweet for her. She's third generation Czech from Illinois. Her grandmother would make kolaches all the time. She can remember them like the back of her hand and she just never wants kolaches from West. Although, whenever I drive through West I have to stop there! I love them. But, then again, I haven't had a Illinois kolache either since I've lived in Texas for 22 of my 25 years of life.

I always stop at the Czech Stop in West since it is convenient when traveling that way.
My better half has now tried kolaches from West and Calvert, and grades them as:
West = B -
Calvert = A +

There are a couple of less touristy shops in West, a couple of blocks off the highway that also have good kolaches & other treats.

ohh, okay. since were on that topic that Valero on loop 1604 close to randolph AFB just past 78 going towards I10, on the right hand side, has some Delicious ones. and not the tiny ones with the sweet bread, this is more of a crossaint type of bread thats real flaky. and the hotdog tastes quite better than a regular vienna sausage.

Czech Stop is certainly convenient, but if you want the best kolaches in West, then head another block towards downtown to Gerik's Ole Czech Smokehouse -- this is where my father went to buy kolaches when passing through from Dallas, and he learned about it from his father - the place has been around for decades.
However, heading 200 miles north to West is just a wee bit out of the way for just kolaches and beer bread (mmmmm) - I only stop there when I'm passing through on the way to Dallas.
Searching around on the web points to several other Czech communities and bakeries far away from San Antonio to the north and east - alas, not much nearby. However, I did run across Burleson County about an hour due east of Austin, which bills itself as the "Kolache Capital of Texas", and holds a Kolache Festival every year in September ( Burleson County Chamber of Commerce - Kolache Festival). I predict a road trip in my future.
