You've got to give them a try at least once, the best I've ever had.

I bought some for mom on mothers day, and she said the kolaches were so good, they took her back to when her grandmother made them.
Zamykal was featured on Texas Country Reporter. That lady works her butt off for those kolaches! They looked delish.

Anyone tried Nagelin's Bakery in New Braunfels? They're pretty tasty.

I haven't found any traditional Czech Koláče (poppy seed and other fruit fillings) in San Antonio. From what I see, the most traditional close by to San Antonio is in San Marcos. It is called Dos Gatos Kolache Bakery Dos Gatos Kolaches Bakery. I haven't been there, but the menu looks good. What everyone is calling Kolache filled with sausage is actually called klobasnek. I guess I may have to open up a traditional Czech bakery in San Antonio using my grandma's recipes!

It's probably better than the pathetic "Lil' Smokies" wrapped in Pillsbury pizza dough that you find at most doughnut shops around here!

A true Texas/Czech kolache is a pastry made of a soft, light bread. It has a bowl like area in the middle where some type of filling (ususally fruit, cream cheese, or poppy seed) is placed before the dough is baked. Delicious!

Has anyone tried the kolaches at Sol y Luna? I've only been there once, but didn't get to try that. I definitely loved what I did get, however. Wish they were closer to where I go. Or maybe I don't wish that...I might get fat if I could go there often!

What is a “Kolache”?
A kolache (the “e” is silent, when speaking of only one) is a Czechoslovakian wedding pastry, much like a "Danish" with a filling in the center. The traditional Czech fillings are usually apricot, poppy seed, peach, prune, cream cheese and cottage cheese. Kolaches are thought of as a breakfast food by most but Czechs know that kolaches are meant to be eaten anytime!
