I have noticed an alarming increase of burned out areas on the shoulders of San Antonio roads lately, which I suspect is mainly attributed to people throwing lit cigarette butts out their car windows!

Folks, we are still in a serious drought and the vegetation is as dry as a tinderbox; so for those of you who smoke and like to toss your lit cigarettes out the window, may I suggest you use the ashtray in the car, or an empty soda can if you don't have one, instead?

Thank you!

We've already gotten Dopo's anti-smo... memo.

Tired of seeing people flicking lit cigarettes from their car

I just got in and saw smoke around Potranco/Talley area while I was driving thru Sea World. Is that what happened there?

As you can imagine... I'm not surprised at all
and I won't be surprised when a gas station blows up because somebody threw a lit cigarette

Well, that's not likely to happen according to Mythbusters...

Quote:
It is possible to ignite a pool of gasoline using only a cigarette?

A cigarette has the potential to light a pool of gasoline but just doesn’t have enough sustained heat. Gas ignites between 500 °F and 540 °F, the cigarette at its hottest was between 450 °F and 500 °F but only when it was actually being smoked. An ignition is very improbable.
But it is very probable to set dry grass on fire by throwing the butt out of the car! And I don't know if that is what happened around the Potranco/Talley area; but a year or so back I saw a bad brush fire where Talley and 471 meet.

All I am asking is for a little responsibility amongst smokers...

The empty soda can is a good idea. If I were a smoker I probably wouldn't want to mess up my car's ash tray either.

Doesn't that go along with being a smoker though? It's too gross and dirty for their car, but they'll gladly flick it out the window onto my hood...(which some ******* did today).

If you smoke, at least have the courtesy to confine it to your own car, instead of everywhere BUT your car. It's really rude.

End rant...

for now.....

So if I light a cigarette right now (Don't have any, don't smoke) and hold it up to a piece of paper, the paper will not light on fire? I am not arguing, I'm genuinely curious. I've heard of people falling asleep with cigarettes and catching their bed on fire, surly dead grass is more flammable than that?

What do you propose is causing these fires?
