Actually, the OP asked about "nicknames" and you are listing the actual names of the neighborhoods, so I don't follow you at all.

Most people in SA seem to know of King William, very very few know Lavaca. Most people in SA know of Monte Vista, very few of Tobin Hill, Alta Vista, etc. When I tell people where I live, it's usually a random stare. Or, if the did know it, it was a shocked expression about my sanity moving into the ghetto. That's changed in recent years, but I'd wager a good proportion of people in SA still have no clue where these "up and coming" areas are - and I still get some blank stares.

As for First Friday, when I first started going (2002 or so), many of my co-workers at the time (who mostly lived Far west/NW) had no clue what it is. It's had more publicity of late, so more are familiar with it, though they tend to think it's the place full of gang warfare on the streets and roving thugs thanks to recent news articles (not from any personal experience).

In both examples I'm referring to long time residents, 20+ years at least.

In any case, Lavaca is the actual name of the neighborhood, it's historic designation (as is King William, Monte Vista, Alta Vista, Mahncke Park etc), rather than a nickname. A "nickname" for Lavaca would be "King William's Servant's Quarters" "King WIlliam's backdoor", "Bohemian King William" etc but those are not commonly known or commonly used. I don't know if AV/TH have similar nicknames referencing them to their more well known and affluent neighbors.

The older sections of town tend to have names (Dignowity Hill, Highland Park, etc), but I wouldn't call these nicknames. Then there's the Deco District, I'm not sure how official that name is or if it would qualify as a nickname.

Oh, and just for the record, Lavaca's boundaries are Durango to the north, S. Presa/S. St Mary's to the west, I-37 to the east, and the southern boundary moves - official historic declaration was initially only a few blocks into the neighborhood, now it goes further south to Carolina St I think, the "real" boundary I believe is hwy 90. I-35 is kind of far away

whatever. I didn't need to start some type of argument about the definition of "nickname" and "real name" of an area. I was just trying to be helpful, and I guess that helpfulness was lost with my perceived ignorance of neighborhoods of the city I've lived in for 20 plus years.

This is, sadly, very true of many suburban dwellers.

Yeah, I know. We're all sort of dim out here.

I know you don't like the rolly-eyes, but truthfully, I'm totally agreeing with you about this. We are nowhere near as bright as the urbanites. Obviously.

I don't think it's so sad that suburbanites don't know the names/locations of inner city neighborhoods. Until recently, many such neighborhoods were just urban ghettos. Why would one concern themselves with that? I don't know the name/location of most suburban subdivisions.... The more well known historic 'hoods represent a significant part of SA's history, but most people know about them. Honestly, as much as I love Lavaca and can argue it has an important place in SA's history, I fully accept it's not on the order of King William.

I do think it's unfortunate that so many don't know of cultural/social events in SA like First Friday, only because they're missing out on all SA has to offer.

Back to the original question, I think of some of the neighborhood names as kind of becoming the nickname for an area. Like all the places with "Inwood" or "Deerfield" in their name (I can think of about 5 of each). The area just becomes "Inwood" even though the exact neighborhood might be 'The Park At...' or 'Woods of...' It's the same sort of thing for all the places off Rogers Ranch Pkwy. There are probably a bunch of different subdivisions there, but the people I work with just call it Rogers Ranch.
