Does anyone have a yard that gets full sun and still able to have flowers plants do well in your yard? Which flowers have worked best for you? I'm looking for some color, tried begonias, but either too much sun or I'm watering too much.

If you want something tall, the Pride of Barbados is very drought resistant and wonderful in color....here is a pic.

Those are really pretty. My husband and I want to do a garden once our home is complete... I just hope it will survive the heat. He is really set on avocados. I am happy with artichokes and tomatoes

Vinca. I do have to water mine in this heat--about every other day, but I have them in two locations, full sun for much of the day, and they're bloomin' away! Also, portulaca, but it's an annual.....I love them anyway, so I keep them in pots in my front bed, but they wake up with the sun and go down with it, too. Bougainvillea are nice also, and they love the heat and sun. I also have some dianthus in a pot out front, and they like the sun also.

Lantana, heather, verbena, plumbago--all do nicely drought-wise, but mine don't all get full sun.

Re your begonias--if the leaves are the lighter green, they need more shade than the darker leaved ones. But mine like a fair amount of water, and I've got them in the shade.

There is a great booklet put out by SAWS ( I think, or at least partially sponsored by them), which lists all the various plants best for this area by shade/sun needs and water needs. Also, visit the botanic gardens, they have examples of different types of gardens suitable for the area.

I've seen the booklet at the Botanic Gardens, Fannick's Nursery and a few other nurseries.

I second Pride of Barbados. They're stunning and I have them growing like weeds around my yard - seriously. Most were here before, never tended, never watered, sitting in full sun and they look amazing.

Another is passion vine, but in afternoon shade. The one I have is basically a weed (in that I didn't plant it and don't tend to it) and it looks amazing this summer. Best ever.

edit - tried to find my booklet but can't find it. Can't recall the name.
Others that do well for me in full sun - lantana, esperanza, trumpet vine, firebush, turk's cap. Plumbago does well with little water, but seems better in partial shade than full sun, at least for me.

or melt! I mix them in with the other stuff. Mine get all the evening sun from the west and it's killing them. I finally made a back board from a piece of privacy fence to block the heat and they are all thriving.

I keep missing the POD. everyone is out every time I go. I started some from seed last year. they are doing fine but still really small.

I love my Lantanas. The more sun they get, the more bright and yellow they are. I see them at alot of neighborhood entrances too, so you know they can take the full sun and heat.
