I suppose you missed the 200 page post on wanting more skyscrapers in SA!

That being said....the writer of the article is a snobbish fop who writes to make himself look important and appeal to the trendy "happening" bunch. I've read his "stuff" before and its all drivel. Heaven forbid that a historic landmark require some "knowledge" to be appreciated!

I think the U.S.'s most overrated tourist attractions are theme parks like Six Flags, Disney World, etc.

Alamo, Wall Street, Plymouth Rock, and the RMS Queen Mary take historical knowledge to appreciate.

What I find odd is that the Alamo is the first place most friends and family that come to visit us want to see!

I also often use it as a place to meet up with people who are staying downtown, and when I have a reason to be downtown during the week I often go early to have breakfast at Shilo's and then go sit in front of the Alamo before the city wakes up. It is quite tranquil...

I wonder what that guy thinks about civil war battlefields.

"Who wants to see grass, snakes and rusted cannons?
Visit Las Vegas, btw, I'm not getting paid to say that"

Nah, the Disney theme parks (or anything Disney) is the most overrated.

HEY!! HEY!! Them's fightin' words.

I love Disneyland! I've never been to the World....really don't have any desire, but there's no place on earth like Disneyland.

I don't put the Alamo in the same category as a theme park, or a wax museum, or a place like Graceland. The Alamo is not a "fun" place--it's a place of reverence and respect. People want to make light of it, but it's a very important piece of our history.

Go to Disneyland for thrills and rides. Come to the Alamo to reflect.

been to almost all of them and agree with all of them. I would also like to know how LindaGrace knew the exact words I said when I first saw the Alamo
Those are pretty much the exact same words everyone else has said when I brought them there. It's also the same words we said at Old Faithful earlier this year. That really should be #1 on the list.

I'm kind of surprised the four corners isn't on that list...

When I was a kid, my dad "drug" us to a bunch of civil war battlefields. I remember that I "didn't get it" for a long time. Gettysburg's is in the middle of a city, and I remember finding that fact odd at the time.

Regarding other historical sites: Lincoln's birthplace? I was more impressed with a tree he sat under (it's real) than I was with the house that was moved into a "memorial building." Ben Franklin's grave? Newly carved, so it didn't resonate like the worn tombstones beside it.

The Alamo is real (I guess except for the German parapet), and means something. I'll admit it may not look impressive, but I sometimes wander by it (I work downtown) to read the entry plaque and think... or as another poster said, to reflect.

It is only when you get older that you see the falseness of Disney (and I love Disneyworld, by the way) as compared to the history of real life.

Here's one that's better than the Alamo

Mt. Sunflower - Highest point in Kansas, 4039ft.
Just 200 miles from Denver and 430 miles from Kansas City.
