Default Dentist for child w/autism

I know there are several posters on here who have children who are the autism spectrum. My son is 4yrs old and needs to go to the dentist for a cleaning. I'm looking for a good, patient dentist who has experience with working with kids with special needs. Anyone have one that you really like?

We had a really good time with Dr. Bob James over on the NW side. Son has Aspergers. I wish I could have brought him with me when I moved.

We use Dr Ben Taylor at Pediatric Dentistry of San Antonio, he specializes in special needs children and is certified in oral surgery. He sees both of our boys, and has been exceptional with our autistic son.

Cheers! M2

Great info. We need the same for my son (Asperger's). I've heard from someone else that there is a dentist at Dentistry for Little Folks (off of 1604 - near Braun) that does great as well, but they never gave the specific name!

Dana Hodge King! She is fantastic!

She's very, very patient and willing to do very little at each visit until the child is comfortable. The entire staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. Dr. King is very experienced and natural with her methods (which we really appreciated). She's very knowledgeable. They also have an outdoor play area for wiggles and many other neat things. Check out her site. We LOVE her!

Melvin Shanley on Moonlight way *huebner* I think someone mentioned him above. But he works with all my kids, one is healthy, one has aspergers, and my oldest is nonverbal and has a chromosome disorder no name for that yet reported. He sees them all and makes concessions and are known for their work with special needs. Also have a wonder Anesthesiologist that flies in once a month to help with sedation for the kids that dont do well awake. MY son is one and hes also fantastic.

Some of the names given here are general dentists. In no way should you take an autistic 4 year old to a general dentist. I say this as a general dentist. We are not trained in how to handle this whatsoever. No weekend course can teach a general dentist how to deal with this.

I will tell you where I would go if I had a 4 year old autistic...the name was already given in this thread.

Dr. Ben Taylor. No doubt in my mind.

Agreed, just because someone is a good dentist does not mean they are capable of working on a special needs child. We were lucky enough to have Dr Taylor as our sons' dentist when we last lived in SA and before our youngest was diagnosed with autism. When we returned we were so happy to learn he was trained in dealing with special needs children.

Dr Taylor has over 20 years of pediatric dentistry experience, and is also the president of the 800-member San Antonio District Dental Society. He's done so well with both of our boys that we'd never consider going anywhere else, and he has our highest recommendation!

Cheers! M2
