Question Deep fryer (Canola) oil disposal?

We just emptied the oil out of our deep fryer. It is Canola oil. Do we have places to properly dispose of this in San Antonio?

Was trying to avoid just throwing it in the trash. It's in a milk jug now in the garage, and my husband has given me one week to find alternative disposal/recycling options for the oil. Anyone know of any place to take it? Anyone trying to run their diesel off old deep fryer oil?

How much do you have? You could try calling Alamo Biodiesel...
and good for you for not just throwing it in the trash!

I think a bunch of restaurants have special garbage canisters in back for oils. I know I saw them at a few different Chinese type places. You might try there as well?

There are several great suggestions here. I would call 311 if you're in the COSA and ask to speak to the Household Waste Disposal Folks. Maybe it can be dropped off at their site on Culebra and 410.

You can place it behind a food establishment at their grease disposal container. You can even call to see if they would mind since the grease / oil is rendered and the establishment gets a small payment.

If you do throw it in the trash put it in the Refrigerator overnite to thicken it up. PLEASE wrap it inside several garbage bags. When the garbage truck compresses the waste the jug will burst. If there is little or no containment and the seals at the bottom of the garbage truck are leaking then you just polluted your street and other neighbors will be upset. Imagine a large oil puddle infront of your home or your next door neighbor's home.

One place is listed on the city's website for dropping off used cooking oil:

"Household Hazardous Waste
7030 Culebra
Open: Fridays From 7:00 am until 4:00 pm
Saturday from 8:00 am until 3:00 pm
Ph 210-207-6400 or 311 Customer Service

Bulked into 55-gallon drums, and taken to a
grease/cooking oil recycler"
