an even slice of the demographic pie is what I seek
Hi there,
Okay, I am grateful to see demographic pie charts, I am used to a pretty even one where I currently live. Well, not "true" even but, pretty diverse.
The least disproportioned demographic pie chart I can find online for SA area is Kirby TX. It is also less than two miles to BAMC.
Anyone from there? Any apartments?
I grew up on the Southwestern suburbs of Chicago and in Chicago...I am used to being surrounded by people of all walks of life, of many different cultures but, predominantly, from White, Latino/Hispanic and Black of African descent.
Advice appreciated.
Gen
p.s. the crime rates in Kirby are much better than what I am accostomed to too!!

My advice...if you're considering Kirby, go drive through it. Don't let the stats make the decision for you. I'd give the same advice about any other part of town too...

San Antonio is 'mostly' Hispanic with the second largest demographic cohort being white and the Blacks being a disproportionately small minority and centered on the east side near downtown. But everyone is pretty much jumbled up together, the deciding facors on where one lives seems to have much more to do with school districts and economic levels than race, although if you're looking for predominant groups, you can definitely find neighborhoods that are much more of one than any other.
Good luck.

Actually, blacks aren't just centered on the east side near downtown.
You'll find that places like Lake Side on the south east side is majority black as well as subdivions like Sunrise in far east SA and Camelot I / Camelot II in northeast SA, these areas more middle class as opposed to the working class of the near east side. Also inbetween those areas there is a large african american presense.

Hi,
It'd be nice but, I am in Chicago right now and will not have the ability to "drive" before I buy.
Gen-the crime stats are better than home and the demo breakdown is most familiar to me...

Hi,
Schools are not a factor for me. One thing I want to avoid is any area with a single predominant group though. This is why I focused on Kirby.
If it is not a good fit for me, then, I will wait out the year lease and move to a place that I've had a good look through at.
Thank you,
Gen
p.s. any Kirby-ans here?

Gen,
Kirby is your average middle class/ lower middle class mid 70's bedroom community. It has seen better days but for the most part is kept up and you get the convenience of having your own city government. The biggest downside is the school district that area of Judson ISD isn't very well respected. Frankly I would rather be more north in the City of Windcrest or in Camelot 1 (not camelot 2).

Hello,
Thank you all for taking the time to share your advice.
It does gear me towards Kirby even more. This is a transitional time for me as a new graduate and I suspect that my "former-lower-class" life and lower Socio economic status is going to change yet...I still come from a working class world with diverse neighbors.
One thing that I noticed on the demographics was the serious lack of Asian population! It will be an experience. However I will miss speaking a sprinkling of Japanese and Korean! I only know some basics, reaaaaal basic basics. However, I currently live walking distance to Thai, Hawai'in, Korean, Chinese and Mediterranian restaurants, (of course, also Mexican places too, about four in walking distance come to mind!)
I do look forward to experiencing life in San Antonio and hope to warm up and settle in while there!
Thanks,
Gennaver-p.s. already looking online for SA running clubs. p.p.s. maybe I could even volunteer with Kirby FD as ems?
