Streetcars, light rail big in VIA's plan (http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/traffic/VIA_maps_a_route_to_the_future.html - broken link)

This looks like a sensible plan, all areas of town have at least some coverage. HOV lanes on all major urban freeways too!

Wake me up when they decide to go ahead and build a light rail loop around 1604 before the land gets expensive.

Not surprised about Light rails. Komrade Wolffe wants it no matter how many times the public votes it down, and in the end will get it whether we like it or not.

I don't think the public cares about public transit because the public wants to own more cars, especially those stuck having to wait in 100-degree heat for a bus.

Public Transit changes when you have stations that provide for more than just a transit stop. Google mockingbird station in Dallas, and that's not the only one in the Dallas area.

The public wants it as well.

This ain’t Dallas. Maybe in 10 years something like that will appear in SA if we are lucky. LOL

Charlie Parker was railing on light rail this morning. To me - he is the epitome of what is wrong with San Antonio as it relates to this topic.

He has a poll up and guaranteed that there is no way more than 25% of the people would be for it.

http://radio.woai.com/pages/charlieparker.html

The funny thing is - as asked - there would be no sales tax increase. I suspect this will be most people's initial hang up and he has removed it from the equation.

It sounds like Mayor Castro - after visiting Seattle - has a new found desire to get real mass transit to the 7th largest city in America. I for one am behind him. I think it is a good idea to start doing real studies to figure out what will work best and where.

Maybe you all can vote on Charlie's website so we can try to get an accurate reading of public sentiment.

I can't remember the last time I saw a bus that was at more than around 40% capacity. Light rail and street cars will be used as a novelty until the newness wears off. How many people on this board ride the bus to work on a regular basis right now. Most people commute times would be so long with mass transit that it would make it impracticle.
