Default Safe comunities near san antonio

my wife and I are coming to the san antonio area soon and we don't have a clue about the area or the city. we are looking for a safe and quiet town nearby the big city to stay for a week or so that is not too expensive. maybe someone could give us some pointers on hotels or motels around the big city that would be ok. how is new braunfels, schertz, etc...
thanks for any help.

You can find relatively safe areas with hotels throughout the city itself. Outside of downtown and a couple neighborhoods, most of San Antonio is suburban. If most of your business is in the city, you may want to stick with that option to avoid the traffic on most of the roads into town.

kinda wanted to stay out of the city so I can kinda explore surrounding communities. everything seems so expensive. I guess I'm just a cheap kinda guy with his wife. were not fancy.
