Good dog training in Alamo Heights area?
Looking for basic training, I'd rather not do clicker-training or anything like that, just basic beginner. I'd like to find an independent place, other than petsmart or petco. Anyone have good experiences in that general area? I don't want to travel too far.
Also, know prices?

Rob Cary is not too far away, I believe on Wetmore or Bulverde road. We have used them and have been very pleased.

The cheapest way to train a dog is do it yourself.
No matter who you hire to train the dog in the beginning, you will still have to train the dog to respond to you as alpha. Basic training can be very easy if you remember two things, consistency and repetition. If you dont want the dog on the couch, never let it on the couch. They dont understand Tuesdays, Thursdays, and every third Friday too well.

I want to start with a trainer, learn some tips and tricks, and maybe meet some people. Then I'll do the rest of the training at home of course.

Honestly, watch some Dog Whisperer. Check out meetups also for some dog groups. how large is the dog? I found a great small dog training book that worked wonders for my chihuahua mix, and she's alpha as all get out. If you have a little dog Id be happy to find tha name of the book again.

Have you checked into training through any of the local humane societies/shelters? These are likely to be positive reinforcement training rather than the Cesar Milan type of training (since American Humane and some other groups disagree with his methods). Positive reinforcement training sometimes includes clicker training, but not always... I haven't taken my dogs to training in S.A. because we took them both through training when I volunteered at a Humane Society where we used to live, but shelters usually offer some kind of training for a reasonable price. I think the Humane Society on Fredericksburg hosts training there, but it's done through a different organization.

Buffy- you are right - that's the San Antonio Dog Training Club that trains at the Humane Society and last I checked - their session was $60 - which I believe is 6 weeks.
