SAN ANTONIO -- A huge battle is brewing in an exclusive North side neighborhood over plans to thin the deer population.

The Elm Creek Homeowners Association wants to trap and slaughter 100 deer out of a herd of 231 in an effort it says is necessary to protect residents, plants and deer.

The important question is, how much are they going to charge per pound?

The idea of giving the meat away to the "homeless" is very short sighted.

The HOA would need to pay for transport, a butcher, an industrial kitchen, a packager and then a distributor - not to mention some sort of refrigeration or freezing option.

Clearly these people are not considering all options and are willing to toss the baby with the bathwater.

This type of thing is done on a regular basis w/ the meat generally going immediately to the poor...usually a shelter or multiple shelters of some sort. Most of the hunts recently have been for feral hogs which are even more destructive than the deer. Both of these species actually survive and reproduce better in human-shared environments and so become overpopulated. Reasons for this are: abundant food supply and the fact that humans have driven off most of the predators. Catch and nueter just will not work because the oint is the critters have overpopulated the food supply, since natural selection hasn't taken them out as it normally would, humans must cull the herd.
