I have had a kid at Churchill for a few years, so I know a bit about how the Churchill community ticks. I agree that theme of the band's production was a bad idea, but I'll be surprised if it leads to disciplinary action beyond an apology.

It's not the choice, or even the title of the piece, but the props, straitjackets, and words that were spelled out (rage, mania, anguish, violent).

It's a definite learning opportunity. Still, the adults should have realized the implications....

Could it be seen as possibly drawing awareness to the problem as opposed to making fun of it? I haven't seen it so I can't make a judgement. It is a very similar complaint to one made against an Alamo Comm. College District event where the students held an event that had the term "asylum" in the name. One of the mental health organizations said it was insensitive to those with mental illness. Didn't seem to stop the college though because this year's student fashion show with Incarnate Word held the "asylum" theme as well.

Political Correctness at it worst. People need to grow some thicker skin. Who cares if it was intensive boohoo. Are we to censor everything so one is offended?

If they where going out of their way to poke fun at the mentally handicapped that would be a different story.

MySA has a similar story today with quotes from the head of the Band Parents organization and a district spokesperson.

If you don't think it's appropriate to censor things, why leave out the mentally handicapped? Why is it OK to make fun of some groups and not others?

Very strange to see a "conservative thinker" on the opposite side of censorship.

You missed the point all together.

They clearly where not making fun of anything. They where incorporating a theme into a school band show. I will point out that I did not say stop anywhere.

This is just like removing the ten commandments from court houses. If you do not like it than don't read it. Does one really believe that removing a symbol of ones faith will affect it?

You show your ignorance of conservative here clearly.

Here you go.

2 a: disposition in politics to preserve what is established b: a political philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing established institutions, and preferring gradual development to abrupt change ; specifically : such a philosophy calling for lower taxes, limited government regulation of business and investing, a strong national defense, and individual financial responsibility for personal needs (as retirement income or health-care coverage)

Here is a great start for you.
