Exclamation Loss of Fire Service in West Bexar County

I have been told by some very reliable sources that Emergency Services District #2 is not going to renew it's contract for fire and rescue services with the Geronimo Village Volunteer Fire Department (GVFD) in west Bexar County. The staff that (GVFD) is mostly paid on duty staff who are all certified and experienced firefighters. Most of them are on paid departments in other cities located in the local area. ESD #2 wants to start it's own department and staff it mostly with volunteers and some paid staff. This move will hurt response times for fire and medical calls. This could also affect our homeowners insurance if the ISO rating is increased from the current level of 6 for an area within 1000 feet of a fire hydrant and within five miles of a fire station. They have one new station that just opened in the Hillcrest subdivsion off of Hwy 1604, south of Marback Rd. A second station is scheduled to be built on Old Talley Rd. If GVFD is closed down there will no longer be any First Responders responding form the middle of their response area off of Talley Road. This is something that all of us who live in this area need to be concerned about. Also if the ISO rating is lowered this give the City of San Antonio another reason to come in here and annex this area, because it will be able to provide a higher quality of service that what is already being provided.

Thanks for the information - Now this is an issue that really effects Westcreek, our safety and property values as well .....right under our noses Maybe you can post the commissioner and Chico's link as well.... Or better yet - I'll sign "your petition" to get it started....

I was totally unaware that something like this could happen! Can they do this without informing the effected homeowners ? Thanks for bringing this to light...... I think Westcreek needs to pull together on this one - and fast.....

According to the GVFD Fall Newsletter http://www.geronimovillagevfd.org/do...Newsletter.pdf

"Please join Geronimo Village VFD, Bexar County Emergency Services District #2, and County Commissioner Chico Rodriguez for our Grand Opening Gathering on October 17, 2009 at 10:00 am. Operations out of the fire station should start on or before October 1, 2009. Refreshments will be served. Question and answer session to follow ceremony."

The Q&A session would be a good opportunity to get more information.
