Hello,
I've been here for just over a year and I'm still looking for relatively easy, non-street-traffic bicycle paths in San Antonio or the immediate surround. Now that the weather is cooling down, it seems most appropriate to go for a pleasant cruise somewhere. I have a racing-type bicycle (12 speed, ram's horn-style handle bars, narrow tires) and an off-road type bicycle (shocks on front fork, wide knobby tires). I would like to go with a friend, so both bicycles would be in use. Any ideas? Flat paths would be most suitable for our level of fitness. Thank you.

The city parks are probably your best bet. Try Brackenridge and McAllister Parks first. You may also be able to bike at Government Canyon, but I don't think those paths are paved.

I always spell OP, 'OP'

Here's a example of a paved trail in OP.

That is absolutely correct, there are no "paved" trails at Govt Canyon but there are lots of great dirt trails.

However, the Front Country area of the park is relatively easy to ride on almost any bicycle that is designed to go off road. My son was even able to ride it on his BMX bikes a few years back (he now rides a mountain bike).

However, the Back Country is much more demanding, and I would recommend staying away from it unless you have the proper gear. That translates into a non-department-store mountain bike, a helmet and some kind of hydration system. You also will need good trail tools and a patch kit. You must also have the skill level to ride out there, it is pretty rough and you will get hurt if you aren't up to the challenge.

Also, it would be wise to ride with someone; I have ridden it alone but that wasn't smart.

For more info on Govt Canyon--to include trail maps--click here.

Cheers! M2
