Hey gang- First trip to Dallas this weekend. Leaving SA Sat morning from the Encino Park region near 281/1604. A little nervous about traffic because of football games in Dallas that weekend. What route would avoid traffic and get me to Richardson, TX best? Thanks guys. DTMom

Just hit 35 and start going. You COULD take 281 for a long ways and cut over, but 35 is probably still your best bet.

Good advice. I've gone both ways. They take about the same amount of time no matter what. Just depends on what kind of scenery you like.

If time is an issue, then take IH-35; if not, then 281. The latter is a much nicer and more relaxing drive...

If you go 35, I would suggest taking the new toll road. You get on right before Austin (Kyle?) and it will deposit you back on 35 at Georgetown. A nice diversion and much quicker than fighting Austin traffic. And only costs a little over $1.00 and they will send you a bill in the mail (Based on traffic camera photos). Then you don't even have to stop to pay the toll!

Actually it's more like $6.40 but still well worth it to miss the downtown I35 traffic in Austin. I'm going by my most recent bill from Texas Tollways CSC. Heck, just the processing fee is $1.00 for pay by mail.

best advice I can give you, is leave in the early AM, 4-5 AM will get you out of downtown Austin Traffic, and most of the Dallas Traffic. save yourself those 6.50 for the toll road. (Gosh I have become such a penny pincher, see what happens when you hang out with moochers LOL Thanks Sapphire for opening my eyes )

For what it's worth, I got caught in northbound I-35 traffic on a Friday evening several years ago during TX-OU weekend - it ended up taking me almost 7 hours from SA to Dallas.

If I were you, I'd definitely take 281 north. It doesn't take that much longer (about 45 minutes, and I don't drive like hell).

Go up 281 and cut over to I35 at 190 (or take the tollroad around Austin). Do not go through Austin on I35. I travel to Dallas at least one weekend every couple of months and 9 times out of ten it takes longer to go through Austin than the extra 30 - 45 minutest that it takes going up 281 (do not believe google maps; it does not take an extra 2 hours to go up 281). Honestly, I have driven through Austin at 2 am and ran into a traffic jam that took 3 hours to get through.
