Jules, why wouldn't you want granite counters?

Insomniac, my choice of style would be Mediteranean

I definitely have to have a plush master bathroom, with spa tub. I would like travertine (sp?) floors and a walk-in shower, with floor to ceiling tiles. I would have bay windows in many areas and floor to ceiling windows in others. Master bath would have bay window with a a shelf inset connected to the tub, for putting your items. I like houses with angled rooms (not square after square boxes). My home would have a warm, old world feel. My lot is large (5 acres) and has a dry, seasonal creekbed running through it. I would dress the acres up to look like a park, complete with bridge over the creekbed and river rock. I have numerous trees, so I would weed out the cedar and leave some of it as natural forest-like.

I have been incredibly blessed and was actually able to build my dream home this year.
We have a large master suite that takes up about 1/3rd of the home. The bedroom leads in to the bathroom which has a 2 person jacuzzi type tub right in the middle of the room. I put in a hand sprayer in both tubs so they can be rinsed out easily after use. The shower is directly behind the tub. It is a full height shower with tiling all the way up to the ceiling and is walk in on both sides. Double shower heads & one is removable to wash out the shower with after your done. His & hers vanity areas and tons of drawers. Once you go through the bathroom you hit the exercise area with treadmill & bike. Then off to the left is a very large master walk-in closet w/built-in shelves, drawers and shoe shelves.
We have an enclosed study which houses all the computers, etc for the family. I have an art room. Laundry room with counters, sink lots of cabinets and a closet to store mops and things. It also has a built in ironing board.
the guest room and my daughter's room are connected with a jack-n-Jill bathroom. It also has a jacuzzi tub (but only for one), and a shower next to it that is tile on 2 sides and glass on 2 sides.
It has a large entry way & the living room has three large glass windows and glass french doors running across it. I got my hearth kitchen. Big rock facade around the gas stove, granite counters & travertine back-splash. It has an island and a large bar that opens to the living room and the dining room. Another beautiful rock facade and hearth around the fireplace. Built in central vac system.
Large covered patio with a built in wet bar, ceiling fans and an outdoor fireplace. A flagstone patio beyond the covered patio with a stone stairway leading out to the back of our property. We are going to put in a water feature of some kind next year (we are saving for that right now)

Out front we built a beautiful portico with big cedar beams and a circular driveway and around the side we have a 3 car garage with an extra workshop area. We did get some lawn put in out front but went with zoysia for low maintenance and all the plants and flowers are xeriscaped. I never knew how much landscaping costs. Whew, was I surprised!!!

Anyway, we dreamed for years about the house and saved for just as many. I also searched the world & Internet over for the best deals so that I could have the things I wanted. I'd probably shoot anyone who tried to take it away. I'm not trying to be boastful, I just love my home. It is everything I ever dreamed it would be, except for the self-cleaning part that someone else so wisely mentioned.

My husband talks the same way. I tell him he's full of it, but I secretly love it.

2Blonde, your house sounds absolutely delightful. Congratulations on your success in building your dream home. Do you plan on putting in a pool? I'm kind of on the fence on that one. I'm kinda worried about the cost of landscaping, too. I think I'll try to do as much of it as I can, as far as tilling, spreading the dirt, seeding and then hire out the rest. I bet you are so cozy in your home...especially around these merry holidays. Good for you. Who was your builder? You sound really happy with their quality.

TXD,
Neither my husband or I want a pool. I don't want the expense or responsibility of one. Besides there are 3 in our neighborhood complex. I think my husband secretly wants to put in a putting green.
The landscaping was a lot but we have a very large front yard since our house is set back around 100 feet. My builders were Charles & Cynthia Benjamin. He's a custom builder who lives in Boerne and builds mostly in the Fair Oaks Ranch area, but came over to the Smithson Valley/Canyon Lake area for us. I was able to keep a close eye on prices. I got triple bids on just about everything and came out 13K under budget which allowed me to pay for a lot of my landscaping.
Yes we are very cozy and enjoying life. My husband says his favorite part of the house is wherever he happens to be at the time.

Great thread, and some excellent replies. So, you know I gotta throw mine in...

For one, I would have to build on top of a hill on at least 40-50 acres (or more) of property. I want my home to be smack dab in the middle of it, with outstanding views in all directions. If I could see the city lights of San Antonio in the distance, that would be great. There would also have to be some water on the property, such as a perennial stream that feeds into a larger body of water, such as a small lake or pond. Some falls would be great, like the ones at Edge Falls north of Bergheim. And I would have to have a couple of dozen cattle on the ranch, with several longhorns thrown in. I just love those animals!

As for the house itself, it would also have to be an open design with a deck completely surrounding the bottom floor. I would keep the main bedrooms upstairs, to include the master which would also have to have its own balcony. I would want stone and wood all around, inside and out, and one large kitchen is enough for me (50 Cent can keep the other four). I would go for a rustic look, with a large stone fireplace and a smaller one in the master bedroom. A small barn-like structure, separate from the house, would serve as the garage. It would have to be big enough to easily drive in and out of, as well as storing several vehicles (Jeeps, motorcycles, etc).

But alas, my dream home is only a dream. I am not in a business where I can make enough money to afford a place like this. But we love the house we are in, we are on a hill and have nice trees in our yard; so I can't complain. But I can still dream, can't I?

Cheers! M2

No specific reason ~ just think that they're kinda overdone/too trendy. I really like the idea of concrete, but have seen some quartz that I thought was gorgeous (slab, not Silestone or other brand). Jis wouldn't wanna do the same thing that even the Montelongo's use on all their flips...
