BTW - the latest left-handed Randall arrived today. Picked it up from my FFL, who just happens to have a sweet Mauser 3-barrel set w/quick-detach scope (30-06, 270, 243) in a case.

Tempting.....VERY freakin' tempting....
I ended up picking up two at the show ...and i was trying to leave room for the show on the 24th...I must find a way..here's what I've picked up in the last 30 days!!

TNR, be careful with any old Mauser. The actions are not hardened at all, they are carburized. I've built many a rifle on the old Mauser actions but today, most barrel makers won't touch a Mauser action. They won't stand up to the hardness testing that all barrel makers do now to limit liability. If it's a military action, pass on it, if it's a commercial, fairly new action, it should be fine.

Cabelas - major bait and switch going on. Went there for a sale item. Told they don't have and in fact only four of them in their stores in the whole country. Would you like to see something else?

Why advertise if you don't have them, at all? Of course, I should have called. Staff pretty rude about it - tough. Manager was better but still galls me.

Well, it's that time again! My favorite gun show is coming to San Antonio! http://www.texasguntalk.com/forums/images/smilies/fighting0002.gif (broken link)

The San Antonio Gun Show, sponsored by Premier Gun Shows out of Ft Worth, will be held at the Expo Hall behind the Freeman Coliseum (right next to the AT&T Center, or plug 3201 East Houston Street, San Antonio, Texas 78219 into your GPS!)

Dates are 24-25 March 2012, and show hours are Saturday 9am – 6pm and Sunday 10am – 5pm.

There will be 800+ tables of a wide selection of firearms, accessories and other assorted items. This show has been extremely popular in the past due to the large number of vendors present, outstanding venue, and excellent bargains!

General Admission is $8 cash only, but you can print a $1 off coupon here and save yourself a buck! You can also get a weekend pass (both days) for $12, children under 12 get free admittance as do uniformed police officers. Parking is a city lot, so they charge $5 for the pleasure.

A group of us usually have breakfast at a nearby restaurant beforehand on Saturday morning (meeting about 8am), if anyone is interested in joining us drop me a DM.

Cheers! M2

If I am in the area, I'll drop by Cabela's but I never make a special trip just to go there.

Actually, if you're near that store there is an excellent gun shop close by called Bullitproof Arms that carries more of the types of weaponry I am interested in (military-style and target firearms).

Cabela's will usually have a few of those kinds of guns but for the most part caters to the hunting crowd, which is fine as that is that store's focus.

Cheers! M2

We just got back and it was great. Lots of great stuff to look at and/or buy, they've even expanded the show into the adjoining hall!

Prices are going up (it's an election year, and it happens every time) so now might be a good time to stock up on those firearms and ammo before things get really silly.

Cheers! M2

Has anyone had any experience with a Hi-Point handgun? Particularly a 9mm but any feedback on any one of their weapons would be great. My sister is looking into getting a handgun since she has moved and doesn't want to pay top price for a handgun she's not sure she'll even keep. She's not too into weapons and personal safety as I am but my Dad and I talked her into it. I've heard of Hi-points but I've never seen them nor fired one. I just want to know that even once she does take her basic handgun familiarization course, which she's taking this weekend, is it a weapon that will not fail or jam or double feed on her in a sticky situation.

Thanks in advance.

The Bexar county fairgrounds show really is a good one. I am happy to see they are growing it. The expanded area today was cool. I would like to see it grow even more.

Personally I have not heard a lot of good things about Hi-Points. They don't have the best reputation and with something as important as a self-defense weapon I don't know if I'd want to skimp. It's one of those things like tires or brakes on my car, or a parachute...it's not someplace I'd look to risk my neck or that of my family just to save a few bucks.

Actually, the local gun shows are the best place to look and handle a variety of pistols to see which one meets her needs. There are less expensive firearms that are reputable and reliable, I have been very pleased with the Taurus pistols I've owned/shot and they can be found at a very reasonable price.

If she can't make it to the show this weekend, there is the monthly SAXET show at Marbach & 410 the weekend of 31 March-1 April that will have 500 tables (the one this weekend is 800+).

Cheers! M2
