Default Community Service Ideas?

Hello All,

My friends and I are looking for some community service opportunities for the holidays. They said their preference is children, I am open to any ideas. Can anyone share with us what organizations you have enjoyed working with?

www.childsafe-sa.org - works with children who have been sexually abused
Contact Nichole Dreighton - They are going to be having several workshops for kids for the Holidays. They should have some flyers posted on the website detailing the events as well.

I'm thinking of giving Elf Louise a call. Elf Louise Christmas Project

If you aren't a good gift wrapper (as I am) they have some data checking and call making stuff you can do as well.

Or what about Toys For Tots? Toys for Tots Foundation - Texas - Volunteer

Several years ago my Son and I volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House in The Medical Center for several weekends. We had the pleasure of meeting the Families of sick children. The experience was great and knowing that we were doing something for them during one of their most difficult times is something I'll never forget. My Son who is now 19 speaks of the Families and often wonders about their children hoping that all turned out fine for them.

It does not have to do with kids, But my family fosters animals from Animal Control services. We have taken care of a 10 month old dog that had to have one of its eyes removed and had a skin condition, we nursed it back to good health and got it ready for adoption and heard it is doing fine, we have also taken care of 2 puppies which were part of 8 that were dumped in a dumpster without their mother when they were 3 days old, we bottle fed them and took care of them until they were 6 weeks old and ready for adoption (I think they have been adopted now), and just finished with 4 puppies that had kennel cough and now they are back and ready for adoption this weekend. It is more time to do this but when you hear that they have gone to forever homes it feels great.

Don't forget about our older friends. Any nursing home would be thrilled to have you come and visit with the patients. They're often forgotten about and it is so sad to think of them all alone on the holidays.

Wrappin with Jack (http://www.ktsa.com/wrappin_with_jack/wrappin_home.htm - broken link)

The wrappin' is a one-shot annual event on December 8 that benefits needy families in conjunction with the Family Service Association of SA. As the link explains, the group need items donated before then, so the volunteers have something to wrap.

One of the best experiences of my life was adopting one family through my Church that needed assistance. Their father left them in the middle of the night, they were getting foreclosed on, sold almost everything so they could eat, were sleeping on the floor and had nothing. I pulled together a group of co-workers, we all went out and bought gifts for the kids, paid their overdue electric bills (so they'd have heat during the winter) and gave the mother gifts and grocery money. We also took them Christmas ornaments and a tree, so they could decorate.

There are TONS of families like that all over this city and it's such a blessing to be able to help one family have a memorable Christmas. If everyone would do that for one family, every family in this city would have a great Christmas season.
