I'm starting PIT in a month or so and I'm looking at my living situation. I have a chance to live for free in New Braunfels but I'm not sure how the drive in the morning would be. I know 35 starts backing up around Schertz Pkwy (at least it does every time I'm there), so I'd probably take 3009 or Schertz Pkwy to 78 to the gate.

Does anyone have a better route for avoiding traffic? Exactly how bad is the traffic around the base in the morning?

Inbound traffic is horrible between 6:30 and probably 7:45. If you come in 3009 and turn on FM78, you'll be looking at taillights all the way through Schertz. Schertz Parkway is probably a wash time wise. Either way, you'll still sit in the turn lane behind 100 other people to get in the east gate. I wouldn't even consider trying to use the main gate from that direction in the morning... so if you need to use the main gate, you'd be better off just coming all the way down Pat Booker from I35. Prepare yourself mentally for the train.

And they recently decided to close the south gate to inbound traffic (starting 11/23 I think)... so however many folks were using that gate will now be joining the mess to get in one of the three front gates.

I work at night (at Randolph) and get to drive past all the folks waiting to get in at 7:00.
