Hi,
Is there anyone here from UTSA(in particular people who have been at UTSA since a freshman and live on campus.) I have a ton of questions to ask, mainly pertaining to student life.

If there is already a thread, please direct me!

Hey Austownian,

I moved to SA to attend UTSA after graduating high school in 2007. Feel free to PM me any questions you have.

Why don't you just post about your on-campus experiences, so that it's helpful to other people asking/reading? No need to keep all your keggers a secret.

Austownian--one of my son's best friends lived on campus 3 years ago. He ended up getting a place of his own off campus due to all the pot smoking going on. Sounds lame, maybe to the pot smokers, but he was finding it extremely difficult to study. The roommate would have several people over, smoke the place out, they would all stick around wasted, and J couldn't study much less try to sleep. Apparently the on-campus cops are pretty slack where the dorms are concerned, so that may or may not be a plus for you.

I do know that the campus is very much wanting to be a comfortable place to stay. They've created a lot of study/play/relax places for students in the last few years.

Well, here's a question for all San Antonians.. Is the Uni in a good part of town? How far is it from the nearest mall, movies, etc?

Default Utsa

Yes, the university is in a good part of town. The Shops at La Cantera are right across the street and there are several movie theatres within 2 or 3 miles. The Rim is also very close by.

Yes it is in one of the most desirable areas of town.

See La Cantera, "Shoppertainment" Capital of Texas?

Wow, sounds nice! Another question... College related... Does FAFSA offer any aide to pay for necessities like clothing, gas, etc? Or, would I need to get a part time job? If so, is the economy(in particularly in the retail sector) looking good?

Well the way it worked for me, you do the fafsa, then I think you have to do a worksheet for utsa also. Anyways I pretty much had an income of $0 and was over 24 years old. They gave me the full pell grant and then some SEOG grant also. I'm taking 15 hours and still had to pay $700 for this semester. If not it would have been closer to $4500 for tuition. Books, I usually buy the new current edition from the bookstore, then just scan / copy out the questions and return them. Then I buy the older editions off of amazon for usually less than $5 a piece.

They've got loans they give out too. There's the stafford loan. Once version is the subsidized one where they pay all the interest on it for you. Basically you borrow $X, 6 months after you graduate you still owe $X, and then interest starts piling on. There's also the unsubsidized ones where you still don't have to make payments till 6 months after you graduate, but interest builds on them the whole time you have them that you will also have to pay back.

It looks like they don't give out any extra financial aid over the summer if you got it during the normal fall and spring semesters, so that's a good time to work.

They did offer me a workstudy, but all the jobs on campus paid minimum wage. You're from Austin, there's no jobs there that straight up pay $7.25/hr or whatever minimum wage is. That all pay slightly above up there.
