Question Leaving Las Vegas...for San Antonio

Good morning, folks!

I have just received a great job offer in San Antonio, with relocation package etc. Really conflicted now because I have a good job and a good life now in Las Vegas. Can someone give me some pros and cons of a possible move to San Antonio? Thanks a lot!

It all depends on what your likes and dislikes are. What is important to you? Read through some of the threads about San Antonio and see what everyone has to say. Not just the good, but the bad and the ugly too.

In MY opinion the pros are housing is really affordable here and the hill country is beautiful.

In MY opinion the cons are: traffic, weather (rains a lot), too crowded/congested, too closed-minded.

Granted, I've only visited Las Vegas as a tourist, but in those visits I have strayed from the strip and out into areas like Henderson. I think one of the things that would be a big change for you, coming from Vegas, is that the pace of life is a lot slower here.

I don't know how often you take advantage of the wonderful restaurants and entertainment that you have in Las Vegas, but that may be something else you miss here as well. We have a 2nd tier Symphony, we get a lot of concerts and Broadway show tours. We do have many restaurants that are well recognized, including several that are recognized as some of the best in Texas. But it's not the same as Vegas, where you can go into practically any hotel/casino and have 4 star restaurants to choose from, or constantly have the hottest performers and shows to choose from.

Compared to Vegas, it probably does rain more here than what you're used to. We've had an abnormally wet Spring and it has colored some of the newer residents perceptions of what our weather is really like. Our summers will be more humid than you're used to, but I don't think it's unbearable.

There is a lot to do here. If you have a family, or are planning on having one, I think that San Antonio is a great place to raise a family. Several of our school districts have some really excellent schools. There are a lot of family activities and I find that people and employers here are very supportive of family commitments.

San Antonio is a culture unto its own. Our history as a city still permeates a lot of what we do. You'll hear things like "That's just how it is in San Antonio" a lot - not in a bad way, but just because things can be a bit different here than in Dallas or Houston, and in general, we're fine with that. There certainly isn't a huge need to speak Spanish here, but you will hear it spoken throughout the city. For example, I was at the dentist last week and the woman in front of me in line for the billing desk was speaking in Spanish to the receptionist. You just come to not think anything of it, and I usually make a game out of how much I can understand. lol.

I've lived in the San Antonio area since I was six. My dad was born here and my mom lived here since she was 14. I think that a lot of my appreciation for the city comes from hearing stories and history from my family, and really understanding how and why San Antonio came to be how it is. As I said - our history and culture is very important to us, especially the more native San Antonians. I mean, my great-great-great grandfather fought at the Alamo, and you find a lot of connections like that here, so of course certain things are going to be more significant to us than to someone who just moved here from another state. I think that the people that move here that end up really enjoying and appreciating San Antonio are the ones who embrace our history, learn about it, and celebrate it as we do. I think that some transplants look down their nose at it a bit, or think that we're "weird" for being so "into" it, and it hinders their ability to really appreciate San Antonio for how it's a bit different, rather than like all of the other big cities out there.

Rains a lot? Nope.

IN MY OPINION it rains a lot in San Antonio. I came from a place where it MIGHT rain 2-3 days out of the year, so for me, having weeks on end of rain is a lot. It doesn't rain this much in Vegas either.

Weeks on end? Please enough with the hyperbole.

Cloudy day doesn't = rain.

SA had wet wet April.

Again, for the 70th time, it was an unusual April.

How unusual? For the entire month of April this year, it rained 15 times in a 30 day span, 50% of the month had a rain day.

In April 2006 there were only 6 days of rain.

In April 2005 there were only 4 days of rain.

I don't understand why you seem to have a prolem with my opinion. I am entitled to my opinion and in my opinion it rains too much. I don't like rain. 50% of a month is too much rain for me. In fact, it rained here last night! Have you checked out the weather forecast? It looks like rain for several days coming up. Don't try and sugarcoat the weather for someone coming here from out of state. It is what it is - and it rains too much.

In your opinion, it rains too much.

I think it's good that 210 posted the actual numbers, so that others can decide if that is too much rain for them, as well. Just because its too much rain for you doesn't mean its too much rain for others.

Even for me, this year, it has rained too much. But as someone who's lived here for 20+ years, I know by experience that this year is an anomaly.

And frankly, 2-3 days of rain a year is an extreme. Like, if Seattle is the extreme of a wet climate, 2-3 days a year is the other end of the extreme. For most people, San Antonio is a decent middle point of the spectrum.

Why do you have a problem with my opinion disagreeing with yours?

You sure are. And I am allowed to counter your opinion with actual facts and data.

The weather forecast for the next four days calls for party cloudy but mostly sunny skies.

Sugar coat? Darling, he or she or they can go to weather.com or some other weather website and see for themselves what the weather is like. You are simply taking what has happened in the short, short time you've lived here and telling people "that's how it is." Give me a break.

If you are really happy where you are, why change things? However, if you are ready for a change, why not? Perhaps making a pro/con list will help you make a decision. Or, a "why I should go", "why I should stay" list. There are great elements to both places, and drawbacks to both (as with any place).
