Southern Living recently named Gruene Hall the "Best Dancehall in Texas". I like Gruene, but there are a bunch of other dancehalls out there just as good, IMO.

It's one of the best, for sure!

I have actually read several books about the history of dancehalls in Texas, very interesting.
You can find a number of titles at the SA library, you can search their online catalog to brouse them. If you have a library card, you can also have any items sent and held for you at your nearest branch.

I miss the Bluebonnet, which I believe has been turned into some sad drive-by strip-mall church. Bluebonnet was great because whole families would go for a night out... so fun to see kids dancing along with parents and grandparents. That's Texas to me.

How about Quhi or Anhalt dance halls? Both very good old Texas dance halls. Leon Springs is one of the better of the new age dance halls.

Used to go to Quihi every other week in early 70's. Westernland in Castroville across from Sammy's in between. Is Quihi still open. It was run by the gun club. Billy Bob's in Fort Worth or What's his name's in Pasadena. My favorite was always our Local "Golden Stallion" on Ackerman Road. "Hill Top" on 281 South was very well known along with one called the "Silver Saddle". Don't think that Gruene Hall would live up to these. But, most of these are now gone.

Quihi is still open. Not sure of status of Mesquite Hall(social club?), Luxello(Cibolo Creek) or Lubianski's. Buildings still there, but not open.

Conestoga Club and Farmers Daughter gone. Sisterdale dance Hall is for sale.

Interesting dance hall site: Texas Dance Halls

I went to Nelson City Dance Hall in Waring a couple weeks ago and it was great fun!

I remember going many times to Lubianski's, Mesquite, Golden Stallion and another place I thought was on Roosevelt or Pleasanton Rd south of SW Military Drive, but I can't remember the name.....

Memories....spent a lot of weekend nights in the 70's at the Golden Stallion. The 80's brought lot's of dancing at The Bluebonnet Palace. I guess the last time I was there was when my husband and I were still dating in 1988. We saw Clint Black there (before he was well-known). Whatever happened to The Texas Dancehall out 281N past 1604? Saw George Strait out there back when he was just starting out. Fun times.
